Carter-Wright is one of eight quality assurance testers for Experis Games located at the headquarters of its parent company ManpowerGroup.
For nearly two months, Carter-Wright and her colleagues have been finding bugs — the “bugs” — in video games that will be released in the coming months and years for Experis’ customers.
“You have to understand how games work to be good at this job,” Carter-Wright said. “Understanding what seems odd, having some kind of familiarity with games and lots of different games helps. But I don’t think you necessarily have to be good at playing to be able to try.”
Trying to lose a game to make it better
Carter-Wright said being observant and paying attention to detail are keys to being a good tester and a willingness to try something “weird. See the article : The 8 saddest games I’ve played during my gaming career.”
“Leave it in a corner for a minute or two and see what happens,” Carter-Wright said. “Jump 50 times in this one place. See if you can move around something. Instead of trying to win the game, try to lose the game. Do the opposite of what the game wants you to do. Do what it asks you to do the game and make it faster or slower. Do weird things and keep your eyes open for anything that looks a little weird.”
Before working at Experis, Carter-Wright worked at a Game Stop in Waukesha and was recruited to come to Milwaukee.
While ManpowerGroup is known as a staffing agency, Experis provides game studios and companies with business technical staff. The new facility now has eight quality testers and is looking for more.
“Experis is everything inside that computing cube,” said Julie Loucks, Regional Vice President of Experis Games. “We also have designers, engineers, character artists, illustrators, user research, data collection, everything in there. We’ve evolved our services over the last five to seven years to include a career path for teams.”
This is Experis’ fourth location. Others are in Portland, Oregon; Bellevue, Washington; and Tempe, Arizona.
Scott Bakke, vice president of Experis Games, said the company works with 40 to 50 customers and offers games on dozens of different devices.
“I’ll use an example, a developer creates a game,” Bakke said. “We’ll be testing this game on a variety of different devices and platforms, so we’re directly or indirectly working in the gaming industry with clients of all shapes, sizes and scopes.”
Experis also works with smartphones and tablets.
“You name a device that’s out there, that sits on our lap, and this game is tested on those different devices,” Bakke said. “We had up to 240 different configurations, phones, PCs, laptops, tablets, whatever device you have out there, it resides in our lab somewhere and we can swap out video cards and sound cards and different things to test compatibility.”
Plans to add many more workers
Experis Games’ new facility in Milwaukee is 15,000 square feet and expects to house up to 170 employees by fall 2023. On the same subject : Most Adults Think Video Games Should Be Taught in School: Community.
John Doyle, director of facilities for Experis Games in Milwaukee, said the company is working with recruiters to find employees and is confident the company will be able to attract workers.
“While we are looking for talent to come and join the team, it is very important to us to take care of that talent,” Doyle said.
“So if somebody comes in at entry level, we’re constantly finding ways to step it up. We’re trying to find ways to get them to improve their career, improve where they want to. If they want to stay in testing, we have levels at which they can reach as an entry-level manager to a manager.”
‘Game testing is very intense labor’
ManpowerGroup unveiled the facility in a soft launch earlier this month that allowed media and members of the sports community, specifically members of the Milwaukee eSports Alliance, to view the setup. Company officials said it will likely be one of the few times it will be open to outside eyes because its clients want to protect their proprietary information and keep their projects secret.
Testers and other employees will have lockers to safely house their phones and other devices, as they are not permitted in the centers where the activity takes place. Employees are free to take breaks and text, make calls in specifically designated areas of the facility.
When Carter-Wright arrives, she gives him a list of tasks and games to work on. If you find a bug, talk to other coworkers to see if they’re having the same problems.
“It’s always great to talk to someone else when a mistake happens and see if they can replicate it as well,” Carter-Wright said. “Sometimes we work across multiple different systems and some of these games are cross-platform, so it’s good to say ‘This is happening on this console or this thing, it’s happening here, are you seeing the same thing I’m seeing?’ Collaboration is very integral in day-to-day life.”
Then log into a different program to describe and catalog the error so that the studio and developers can find and fix the problem.
“Writing bugs or investigating bugs can take an hour or two just for a bug, depending on how deep it is,” Carter-Wright said. “If you find 10 bugs, you might be doing this task for five hours, depending on how bad the bugs are.”
James O’Hagan, vice president of educational innovation at LeagueSpot, a company that organizes sports tournaments and events, was among the people invited to see the testers in action and see the facilities.
“As someone who started out as a game tester when I was in high school … Seeing it now as this much bigger market business, I’d like to think back to the business years and years ago,” O’Hagan said. “It’s not just kids sitting around, playing video games and trying to crack the game, like I when i was in high school. This is a very sophisticated form of quality assurance and the testing that’s going on… it’s looking at the limits of games and ultimately trying to improve them.”
O’Hagan is a member of the Milwaukee eSports Alliance, which is a network of fans and participants in sports and games.
“There’s a groundswell of support because we know there are economic engines at play that can really begin to redefine what Milwaukee is and its place in the Midwest,” O’Hagan said. “Nobody would think of Milwaukee as a gaming hub, if you will, but what we’re finding, as we look at the industry beyond gaming, you start to see those opportunities when you look and explore what we have in the area.”
A new view of gaming
O’Hagan said Experis and ManpowerGroup are helping to change the perception of gaming in the area.
“Game testing is very intensive work, it’s a key cog in software development,” O’Hagan said. “This is not an arcade…this is play and science and discovery and trial and error.”
Carter-Wright said he is grateful for the opportunity to watch the games unfold.
“Testing to make sure something works is important in any field,” Carter-Wright said. “Getting people to know what they’re doing to make sure it’s working the way it’s supposed to work is an important task. It might seem strange because video games and video games are strange, but if you buy a $60 game and play it and crashes the moment you start it, it would annoy you. You’ve spent money on something that doesn’t work.”
“I’m here to make sure what makes you happy works the way it’s supposed to, so you have the best and most fun possible.”
