Primal premiered in October 2019 and is currently in its second season. It is the latest work of Gennady Tartakovsky, known for Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, Hotel Transylvania and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Primal is Tartakovsky’s darkest work to date, about a Neanderthal and a dinosaur exploring a violent and merciless prehistoric world.

The series won Annie and Primetime Emmy Awards for its incredible visual storytelling that uses no dialogue. Interestingly, some of the best video games out there used the same formula as Primal, such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and Journey. The current popularity of Primal and the history of games with similar storytelling elements is a sign that more games may want to jump on the bandwagon of quiet stories with strong visuals.

How Primal’s Storytelling Methods Are Perfect For Video Games

Primal follows the “show don’t tell” rule to the extreme. Spear, the main character, said the most words during the show’s two seasons; instead, most character information is told through facial expressions and body language. Since many of the characters are dinosaurs and prehistoric animals, this visual storytelling choice is very important. Even when multiple people meet, there is a huge language barrier, and neither the protagonist (nor the audience) usually know what is being said.

Video games succeeded in this formula before Primal. In fact, video games are known for silent protagonists, as this was used as a way to project the player more into the character. Primal works a bit like this with Spear as well, who can’t tell the audience what he’s thinking or feeling, so it’s up to them to decide based on his actions.

So many video games already do much of what Primal serves, but there are some elements that make Primal special. It takes a quiet story and sets it in a ruthless world with a protagonist who is full of emotions. He is incredibly reactive, which is an element that many silent video games omit in order to allow the player to project himself more. In Elden Ring, for example, the silent protagonist is always emotionless in favor of the player’s projection.

Projection is part of the magic of video games. TV and books can’t quite replicate the same thing with a protagonist. However, projection is not in every video game. In games where there is no projection, there is a lot of dialogue. The protagonist can talk to himself a lot and have voice acting or a choice of written dialogue. This is where the missing piece is revealed: video games should look at Primal as a way to have a reactive emotional protagonist while still keeping the story quiet and visually oriented.

The games that came closest to Primal would be the Team Ico games, and they are widely considered to be some of the best video games of all time. These are the titles that made the argument that video games were art back in 2001. While not as violent or prehistoric as Primal, they captured the same visual story without sacrificing the emotions and reactions of the characters.

Unfortunately, video games can have limitations because the protagonist’s face is not always visible and therefore does not show their reaction and emotions. Usually players see the back of the character they control. Here, creating a game that mimics the raw emotion and action of Primal might be a challenge, but not impossible. Games are always finding new ways to tell a story. Considering that many developers and publishers probably grew up on Tartakovsky’s works, the gaming industry could really take a look at Primal and what a game like Primal could look like.
