While many of today’s electric vehicles take on sleek designs that appear to be inspired by Tron or Star Trek, Mini’s new electric concept takes a different approach. Called the Mini Aceman concept, this new crossover looks cheeky and seems to be inspired by video games like Nintendo’s Animal Crossing or Super Mario Brothers. Mini says the Aceman previews a future production vehicle that will fit between the Cooper hatchback and the Countryman subcompact SUV.

There’s currently no timeline for when the Aceman might enter production, but with the Clubman set to leave the lineup in 2024, it could be around then. There aren’t any tech specs to speak of yet, but hopefully the Concept Aceman improves on Cooper Electric’s 110-mile range.

You’ve probably noticed by now that the Aceman’s name is only one letter away from the oddball Mini Paceman, a two-door version of the Countryman sold from 2013 to 2016. Compared to this model, the Aceman is more wider and taller, which should make the interior more spacious. Plus, with its four doors, plastic upholstery, geometric wheel arches and roof rack, the Aceman should appeal to a more rugged crowd, though they might appreciate the cute stuff too.

The base form of the Aceman is pure Mini, but the details seem to come from an alternate cartoon universe full of 8-bit shapes and rainbow lights. The rims look like unfolded playing cards, and the headlights and grille are highlighted in solid light with a central LED matrix reminiscent of old Lite-Brite toys.

The matrix lights are able to wink at the driver and display the top half of the Union Jack flag, and the front glows brighter as you approach the vehicle. The taillights also feature similar lighting patterns with their pixelated half-Union Jack shape. Colored accents such as the green roof and the blue front bumper complete the look.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a burst of colorful animation on the circular main screen, as well as a projection on the fabric dashboard. Images and an interactive map can be projected onto the dashboard via Aceman’s three experience modes. One of the modes even allows you to play with gamified bubbles on the dashboard when the vehicle is stationary. All visual animations are also accompanied by sounds.

The rest of the interior also features cloth, as Mini specifically touts the Aceman’s lack of chrome and leather. The steering wheel is wrapped in velor and the seats are embroidered with a whimsical Tic-Tac-Toe-inspired pattern. Elsewhere inside, there’s a modular center console, purple seat belts and sunset-colored speakers.

As much as the Aceman concept looks to a cartoonish future, it honors the Mini heritage. The roof rack crossbars are styled to resemble the Union Jack flag, and the roof itself and some interior details are dressed in British Racing Green.

Curious eyes will be able to see the electric crossover when it’s unveiled in person next month at Gamescom 2022, a video game convention in Cologne, Germany.
