Popular sports often have a comparably successful video game adaptation. At first glance, it may seem that the popularity of the sport has an obvious effect on the success of the video. However, a deeper look may see the opposite effect, depending on the sport in question, or even a more symbiotic relationship.

Video Games Shaping Sports

Correlation, not a causation

When we look at the incredible success of a series like FIFA, it is easy to assume a direct link to the popularity of the sport. This may interest you : 8 of the scariest serial killers in video games. Furthermore, the assumption may be safe and/or correct.

It is undeniable that there is a noticeable correlation between the popularity of a sport and its adaptation to video games. In fact, it seems as if you could almost guess the popularity of a sport based on the success of its video game counterpart with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

I mean, how many of you have played a video game around a pool tournament? The closest thing to a video game would be a mini pool table for kids, so the answer is probably not too high.

However, it is important to note that this is correlation, not causation. In fact, it’s more likely the other way around – the popularity of a sport greatly influences the success of its video game adaptation.

It Certainly Does Have An Impact

While video game adaptations are unlikely to determine the popularity of sports, that doesn’t mean they have no influence at all. On the same subject : 10 video games harder than they seem. Certain video game franchises have increased the popularity of the sport astronomically and millions of new fans have been brought in through this program.

Sports such as football, basketball and F1 have undoubtedly been influenced by individual video game franchises. While it may seem like video game adaptations can mold and shape the sports industry however they want, that may not be the case for everyone. A prime example is the fall of the WWE 2K series. While WWE has reported record profits over the past two years, the gaming franchise itself has consistently declined year over year.

Undoubtedly, video game adaptations certainly add to the popularity of certain sports, especially in this recent quarantine environment, and many people attribute their love of sports to video game adaptations.

However, it’s incredibly likely that the sports industry would look the same as it does now even without the addition of popular sports game franchises like FIFA or NBA 2K, and in the grand scheme of things, it looks like they’ve made very little difference in terms of relative popularity.
