In 1983, the video game market officially crashed. Atari, the biggest player in the game at the time, spent millions of dollars on a game that went down as the biggest flop in video game history. Suddenly, the development industry is on the brink of death, and it might have collapsed if Mario and friends didn’t come along in two years.

ET the Extra-terrestrial is truly considered one of the greatest movies ever made, and in the media world, if something succeeds on one platform, it will succeed on another. Atari acquired the rights to the video game adaptation for $21 million in 1982, which, adjusted for inflation, translates to about $62 million today. Atari wanted the game on shelves for the 1982 holiday season, less than six months after the film’s release.

So basically, Atari had a whole team working around the clock on it… Except, no; not what he did. Instead, he asked Howard Scott Warshaw to produce the entire game in five weeks, himself. Warshaw has been successful in this five-week period, but there are consequences to the fast-paced game.

The final product remains, the health of users has not been checked. You play as a super alien gathering all the parts to put together a phone that can contact his home world… there has to be a cool way to say that. It’s not the most exciting gameplay loop, and it’s especially not helped by the frustrating aspect that sees you repeatedly fall into a pit if you don’t match your inputs. .

Unfortunately, if you play the game without reading the book, you have no idea what to do. Thanks to the constraints with time and technology, there are no instructions in the game so the full reading of the book is in order, something that every child wants to spend Christmas morning doing.

It quickly became the talk of the users that the game was not what everyone had hoped for. That’s bad news for Atari, which is hoping for a big return on its $21 million investment. The game didn’t sell well, and most people who bought it ended up getting a refund after trying to play it for five minutes.

These days publishers and development studios make so much money and are so careful about their spending that one game failure won’t bring down the company. However, when the industry was young, there was no safety net. Small companies fold after small failures, so something big remains unrecoverable.

So Atari folded and the biggest names in Western video games were suddenly out of business. Normally this is where a story like this would end, but there is still a big problem. With such high expectations for the game, all the copies of ET and other Atari games that are on the shelves must be addressed, but where to put them?

Now comes the bad part of the story that you probably already know. Instead of selling them at a low price to get at least something out of them, they were all thrown into a New Mexico vault and buried forever; or, until 2014 when they were excavated.

Excavators have found 1,300 buried games, of which about a hundred are ET, but that is hardly the top of what is being sought. According to the former manager of Atari, James Heller, 728k games are in this underground field, although it is possible for the best that not all of them have been mined.

While this game was not the only factor in the video game crash of 1983, it showed how fragile the new media industry could be. Thankfully, Japanese companies like Nintendo are still growing, and have used this downturn as an opportunity to boost Western growth. Eventually, the industry recovered and is now the richest media industry in the world.

Companies are now smart enough to avoid single points of failure like this example, but it’s a scary reminder of how fickle the market can be, and how easily a bad decision can undo years of success.
