This week we talk about achievements in video games. These are results, not results. While our biggest accomplishment might include goals, so I guess that doesn’t make it any clearer. Basically, imagine something in a video game. Everything. Now imagine doing it. Now imagine feeling good. These are the things we talk about today. Does this make sense? No? Great, now we’re getting somewhere. Anyway, we will talk about all the hard things we have done in real hard video games, because we are real hard gamers. It’s hard as hard, not as hard as … you know what, it doesn’t matter. We know what the big question is, so let’s move on to the big answers The size of a small answer.
Catching All Original 151 Pokemon, Kinda
I caught all 151 Pokemon in Pokemon Blue and yes it still matters if I used the Rare Candy trick and made it to the top. I mean, I guess that’s all. Let’s do some filler writing, huh? My favorite Pokemon at the time was Zapdos, but I’ve since decided that having a Legendary Pokemon as your favorite is desperately nerdy, even more so than having a favorite Pokemon to begin with, so now it’s Gengar. Yes, I know it’s just as predictable. Anyway I guess that’s enough words. I was the best like no one has ever been.
Getting A Mirror’s Edge Speedrunning World Record
Back in the days of Xbox 360, I really got hooked on Mirror’s Edge speedrunning. I knew all the tricks, and although I was never a major contender for world records, I reduced my full run to just over an hour. The only major success I had in Speedrunning Mirror’s Edge was in the oft-forgotten DLC, Pure Time Trials. Maps of abstract shapes floating in the void were the cleanest way to play and I was obsessed with them. So much so that, after months of hammering it, I very briefly achieved the world record for the kinetic map. A few days later the game was overrun by hackers and its rankings were ruined, but for those few glorious hours I was someone.
Maxing Out Every Final Fantasy 7 Character
I am an idiot in the sense that I will always find a way to waste time that could be spent in more productive ways. I’m also a fan of JRPGs, especially the turn-based variety. Put the two together, and there are hundreds and hundreds of hours of characters with minimum and maximum to ridiculously overwhelm, for no other reason I can.
This is especially true of Final Fantasy 7, my all time favorite game. Emerald Weapon was a challenge to begin with, especially before figuring out the correlation between matter and damage of its Aire Tam Storm attack. Instead of taking the easy option and simply linking W-Summon with Knights of the Round and Mime, I’ve spent too much time farming Sources in the Gelnika and maximizing every stat on each character. Not just the three I used to fight Emerald, all nine. Then I fought with only one material equipped on each. Yikes.
Flying Every Airplane In Microsoft Flight Simulator
I am extremely scrupulous about simulations. Whether it’s racing or flying games, I’m always looking for the most accurate experience possible. This obviously makes mastering each vehicle a kind of game in and of itself. When it comes to flight simulators, I read pilots’ operating manuals and operate airplanes only in accordance with the relevant Aircraft Flight Manual, so I have spent quite a bit of work just reproducing them. Looking back over the past two years of playing Microsoft’s flight sim of the same name, I have to admit that learning to fly almost every single airplane in the game is one of my greatest achievements. Becoming A Gran Turismo Sport Pro
During the block I decided to “git gud” to Gran Turismo Sport. As a child I had played a lot of GT2 and GT3, but then I left the series. Sport was my return. It was a great learning experience to finally understand driving lines and braking distances and put them into practice. The heyday was taking gold at the Lap Attack on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Circuit Experience. I ran 100 percent of the game. Being Far Too Good At FPS Games For Years
I was number one in the world in Call of Duty: Black Ops, Xbox 360, for Headquarters, Team Deathmatch and Domination. I was 15 too and had no mates, apart from a strange Belgian guy I met online and the two friends down the street who kept knocking on my door to make me come and smoke in the park. During the block, I was in the top 5 Apex Predators in Apex Legends on Xbox. My couch was a throne of cans – my friends over the headset could just hear a metallic creak every time I got up or sat down. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend playing FPS games for 15 hours a day.
Dominating The Guitar Hero Leaderboards
I’m really good with Guitar Hero. As a teenager I was regularly topping the world rankings on Expert difficulty while playing alongside siblings and schoolmates in Legends of Rock and World Tour. It even led me to pick up a couple of real instruments (albeit with mixed success) and get a reputation as that person who was really good at that guitar game with all the old songs on it. I think my biggest success during this time came when I picked up the Snow Patrol DLC pack upon release and climbed the charts and stayed there for weeks. I was untouchable and consolidated my place as a true player who remains faithful to this day.
Not Giving Up On The Classic Fallouts
I suck at games. Like, a lot. However, I also love boomer RPGs made before a human made sure they were actually completable, so there’s a bit of a conflict there. With that in mind, my proudest achievement is that I’ve been stubborn enough to beat games like classic Fallouts and Baldur’s Gates. Fallout fans in particular ignore the two isometric RPGs that got the series off the ground, and it’s their loss. If you stick to them, they are the absolute pinnacle of the franchise and some of the best games you will ever play. Oh, I also nearly beat Dragon Age: Origins on Hard, but that fight against Broodmother was pissing off.
100 Percent World Completion In Guild Wars 2, Back When It Was Even Harder
I have been playing Guild Wars 2 for about a decade, with many long time frames (as is often the case with MMORPGs). One of my favorite things about it is the way it changes and evolves over time, even if that means the Guild Wars I experience when I log in today doesn’t look like what I logged in 10 years ago. It also means that I can leverage my experience with new players (although, depending on how obsessed they are with the game, they often know more than I do). The thing I’m most proud of is that I reached 100 percent World Completion when you had yet to complete the World vs World maps.
A little context for those of you who aren’t Guild Wars 2 players: the game is divided into maps of a planet, which is called Tyria. In each of these maps there are missions to do, panoramas to see, etc., and when you have done everything in one map you gain 100 percent completion. Completing the world at 100 percent, then, is obviously doing it for every single map in the game. Back when I first wanted 100% world completion, you not only had to complete all PvE maps, but also World vs World maps, a special PvP area where members of each server compete for each other against each other. In World vs World maps, the areas I had to complete were often occupied by enemy servers and I had to sneak in or wait for my moment until my server caught it. With four World vs World maps in total, this was a test.
Now they have updated it so that no one has to feel my pain; World vs World maps do not count towards total map completion. I’m happy for the newcomers, but I also have an old man inside me, who says “in my day” and shakes his cane.
Beating Halo 3 LASO
Halo 3 LASO. I never have and never will do something so beautiful again. I have officially peaked, and that’s okay. And no, since I want to live a happy and healthy life, I will never complete my Halo 2 LASO attempt. Two missions and I had about 50 years to live, one for every Jackal sniper who took me. Never again.
