A multi-platform video game in which players become ‘heroes of Polish intelligence’ will be included in the national curriculum in a bid to make Polish history more appealing to a younger audience.

Set during the Polish-Bolshevik War, and developed by the Office of New Technologies at the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), Gra Szyfrów challenges users to crack Bolshevik ciphers, guard radio lines of communication, and neutralize armored trains.

Starting in Fort Warsaw, the game then takes players to Koroste (now Ukraine) where they are tasked with cutting off Soviet troops from the military logistics center stationed there.

Immersed in drama, the introductory text sets the scene: “It’s the end of 1920. The Polish-Bolshevik war has been going on for almost two years. The battle of Korosteń – the main railway junction and technical supply base – is ongoing.”

Available for free, and playable on PCs, mobile devices and VR glasses, the game is described as a groundbreaking project that can be used as a “didactic tool during class”.

Avoiding detection, players must steal classified documents from an officer’s train carriage before then beating time to derail an armored train in a railroad tunnel.

Consisting of three missions, the game is designed to be as faithful to history as possible and is based on source material and historical exhibits to ensure accuracy.

Released in April in Polish and English (the latter under the title ‘Game Cyphers – War For Everything’), the game expertly narrates the course of the war as well as “the influence of Polish cryptology in its final victory”.

Met with mostly positive reviews, international users praised it for its “interesting story and great visuals” as well as “very high production value for a free game”.

“I could even spend hours on music,” wrote another critic, before adding, “it’s not just a game, but a look into the past.”

Announcing the decision to incorporate games into the curriculum last weekend, the Minister of Education and Science, Przemysław Czarnek, said: “This is the next stage in terms of modernizing Polish schools.”

Magdalena Hajduk, director of IPN’s New Technology Office added: “The nanosecond culture and the needs and lifestyles of the younger generation – as well as the dynamic development of technology – require us to build a new educational model that combines reality and the digital world.

“We are proud that Cyphers Game will serve teachers and stimulate young people to be inspired by the heroes of Polish history. We want to not only respond to the contemporary needs of young people, but also to educate and demonstrate that history is a great teacher of life’s values – the technology we develop can help us learn its lessons.”

As part of a broader initiative entitled Games in Education, Czarnek also used the opportunity to incorporate another game, This War of Mine, into the school curriculum.

Originally developed in 2014 by Warsaw-based company 11 Bit Studios, the game – which will be available to older students – has since gone on to garner many awards, not least for its unique perspective.

Justyna Orłowska, Program Director of GovTech Poland, took the opportunity to promise that the government would explore the idea of funding Poland’s booming video game industry as long as development studios put forward “higher educational value” projects that would eventually be free of charge.
