Against all odds, board games have not been crushed by the growing video game medium. Certainly they’re not nearly as big, but the medium hasn’t been replaced. There’s definitely an argument that long-form tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons are more popular now than ever. They’ve certainly reached into the digital and cinematic realms.

But there are also more traditional family board games like Monopoly, which have evolved into video games since the 80’s with titles like Pictionary. Some of these board game versions have even reached quite a high rank. Review aggregator site Metacritic lists which of their outings is the best.

The game was originally released for iOS but also came to Steam. There are four diseases that the player must carefully monitor. It’s a little more hopeful than Plague Inc., where the win condition is global infection. Unfortunately, this game was dropped from modern platforms last year.

7 Monopoly Tycoon (2001) – 85

Most board game video games are direct adaptations of the game. Monopoly Tycoon actually takes a completely different approach. Based on popular simulation games of the time, players actually own shops and locations on the game’s streets. Dice were even removed to make it a better simulator.

Money is actually made by selling products and thereby buying more property. The railways and public works are also included but are actually being auctioned. The game contains all the streets of the original with three additional blocks. Players can fight against AI or multiplayer via LAN.

6 Summoner Wars (2012) – 86

Unfortunately, this game is no longer playable. Unfortunately, the Android and iOS versions are too old to play on modern platforms. It’s a real shame as Summoner Wars is the definitive version of the game for sure. The original board game is weird and obscure and not easily available these days.

The game is about assembling an army to control the planet Itharia. It’s a combination of a deck building card game but with board placement elements. The game features a ton of factions to choose from with unique spells and units of your own. Critics at the time said it felt like a fusion of RISK and Magic: The Gathering.

5 Elder Sign: Omens (2011) – 87

Elder Sign: Omens is a video game adaptation of the spooky board game perfect for Halloween. Like many horror board games, it’s packed with Lovecraft themes. A team of investigators must investigate different locations to stop an ancient location from appearing, and there are many different locations to investigate.

One benefit of video games is that they can include expansion content. The Steam version includes tons of content for this game, including seven different ancients to fight and over thirty unique investigators with different abilities. Finally, there is plenty of content with over 200 individual levels.

4 Blokus HD (2010) – 88

Puzzle games are usually considered an exclusive genre for video games. Especially ones that involve putting small rectangles together, which is reminiscent of Tetris. This niche is also occupied by the board game market in the addictive Blokus. For mobile platforms, Blokus HD is by far the best adaptation.

The game features crisp graphics and in-game score counters so players don’t have to keep count. It includes both the four-player original and the two-player Blokus Duo. Some critics also found the graphics too complex for a simple game. Either way, it’s a great substitute if you don’t have the physical game to hand.

3 Ticket To Ride (2011) – 91

Ticket to Ride is an adaptation of the German board game of the same name. It was developed by Next Level Games, the developers of the Mario Strikers games, and it is one of their longest-lived projects. The original 2004 game was on browsers but has grown. It has versions for Playstation 4 and Xbox One, although the 2011 iOS version is considered the best.

At the start of the game, players acquire cards representing wagons. During the game, they acquire additional cards depicting trains and cars with the aim of securing entire routes. The game ends when at least one player runs out of moves and the winner is determined by the number of fertile stretches. The game also includes additional downloadable maps.

2 Carcassone (2010) – 91

This turn-based strategy game was one of the first board games for Xbox 360’s Xbox Live Arcade, although it found more success again with its mobile port. This is a game with tiles that are placed as the game progresses. Players also receive followers, which are used to claim land. The game ends when all land tiles have been placed and whoever has more of them wins.

One reason Carcassonne had so much success over other board games when it was released was because of its original content. Many video board games simply included the original game as is. Carcassonne included not only quality of life features like tutorials and online, but also an expansion. The base game featured content from The River expansion, which was included at no additional cost.

1 Scrabble for iPad (2010) – 94

Scrabble word game seems to be one of the best video game games. The problem with the game has always been which words are allowed and which are not. Converting to a program fixes this problem. Unfortunately none of the digital forms from Scrabble to Scrabble for iPad in 2010 have been well reviewed.

The title really speaks to the time this game was released. Tablets were more common in the early days of the Tens and it made a lot of sense to have one as a replacement for a bulker board. Tablets are rarer these days, but Scrabble for iPad is still unsurpassed with its novel features like online play and leaderboards. Most unique and exciting was its ability to send a player’s mail shelf to players’ iPhones while the main game is being played on the iPad.
