Like movies and TV shows, the quality of Star Wars video games varies a lot. Certified classics include Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Forces, X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter and Battlefront, but also plenty of unforgettable low quality bantha fodder. This is what happens when a galactically popular series like this creates more than a hundred (and counting) spin-off games: they can’t all be good. But one thing I would never blame is having boring Star Wars games. People have been doing these things since the 1980s, and by that time George Lucas’s galaxy has become far, far away, into pretty wild and amazing things.
In the late ’90s, LucasArts made Lucas Learning a truly special Star Wars game in the name of entertainment. Star Wars: DroidWorks (1998) is an elegant and charming game about connecting different sections of the droid to create your own custom Star Wars robots. There are almost 100 bits and pieces to choose from, allowing you to create all sorts of weird looking droids. Then you can take control of them and use them to solve fuzzy educational puzzles.
Star Wars Episode I: The Gungan Frontier (1999) is another original version of Lucas Learning’s Star Wars. In this ecological simulator, Gungan leader Boss Nass asks you to grow one of Naboo’s moons with life. You plant flora and release wildlife to create a food chain, and then you have to manage to create a balanced ecosystem. It’s a great idea for a game, and also refreshing when it comes to killing so many other spin-off stormtroopers in Star Wars games.
The prolific Lucas Learning also developed Star Wars: Pit Droids (1999), a puzzle starring those pretty prequel droids who recently returned to The Mandalorian. There are 300 puzzles in the game, which involves driving a stream of Lemmings-style droids through obstacles-filled mazes. The idea is that Wattok, that Idiot from Episode I, bought too many of them and your efforts to solve your puzzles are to stop wandering around Tatooin.
Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing (2001) was an inevitable Star Wars kart race, featuring cartoons and big-headed characters from pre-movie films. Anakin flies in a small N-1 star plane, while Queen Amidala pilots a smaller version of her bright Naboo Royal Starship. There are worse kart runners, and the cheerful, jazzy renditions of John Williams ’score (check out this inappropriate version of Duel of the Fates) are pretty fun.
Star Wars: Yoda Stories (1997) is one of the most bizarre Star Wars games developed by LucasArts. Part of a series called Desktop Adventures, which also included an Indiana Jones game, is played on a desktop window on your computer. Playing as Luke Skywalker, you explore random maps based on the popular Star Wars planets, gathering items to complete quests. She is very simplistic and quite boring, but there is something nice about her lil chibi pretty character.
Star Wars also immersed its fingers in the struggle of vehicles, a popular genre that once seemed to have been forgotten by the world. Star Wars: Demolition (2000) was developed by Luxoflux (True Crime: Streets of LA popularity) and includes a selection of Star Wars vehicles — AT-STs, podracers, landspeeders, swoop bikes, etc. — that collide in combat. It’s a far cry from the classic, and the control smells bad, but if you like the idea of Twisted Metal in Star Wars cosplay, you might want to take a brief look.
There was also a beat-‘em-up in Star Wars, amazing. Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi (1997) was developed by LucasArts and answers the most serious question in Star Wars: What if Chewbacca and Han Solo started playing together? This is basically Tekken with the Star Wars characters, but not so good. However, watching the beloved characters fight against each other has comic value, and the mocap animations — Industrial Light & amp; Magic is a decent help.
Star Wars: Rebellion (1998) is a strategy game developed by Coolhand Interactive, inspired by the 4X genre. There’s a huge selection of recruiting heroes from the movies and the Expanded Universe, or what’s now called ‘Legends’, I think. As you explore, spy, and negotiate across the galaxy, you create your own new Star Wars stories starring legends like Han Solo, Wedge Antilles, Darth Vader, and Admiral Thrawn.
Sounds too exciting, what about Star Wars Chess (1993)? Developed by Software Toolworks, this is exactly what it is. The Chessmaster 3000 is built on the bones of the popular chess simulator, so it’s a pretty good chess game, but the Star Wars characters have animated pieces and fight scenes. The best thing about Star Wars Chess is the initial exploration, which explains that Empire and Rebellion are now friends and that the differences they play in chess are fixed.
Star Wars games used to be very interesting. Alas, those days are long gone. No one will take risks in something like The Gungan Frontier or Rebellion. He’s a complete Jedi, which is the safest bet.
