Decades ago, when smartphones magically transformed into gaming devices, I was a huge fan of mobile gaming. I would spend hours of my travel time playing games like Doodle Jump, Angry Birds, or Tiny Wings.
Then at some point I just… stopped playing video games on my phone. I never got hooked on any of the Clash of Clans style games or any kind of exploitative pay to earn experience online. Slowly but surely, my phone became a washing machine or fridge: a piece of technology that solves a handful of extremely routine problems and nothing more. Fun is not allowed.
But then I started playing Poinpy.
Poinby is the latest game from Ojiro Fumoto, better known as the guy who created Downwell, a superbly tactile retro shooter about a man who jumps into a well and blows up a lot of stuff in the process.
But in Poinpy you don’t go down. Poinpy is very much a video game about climbing.
At the basic level, Poinpy is a video game about collecting fruit to feed a menacing-looking monster trying to kill you. But, mechanically, it’s kind of the greatest hits, borrowing handsomely from the viral mobile games of yesteryear. Like Doodle Jump, Poinpy makes you move up, only using slingshot bows exactly like the ones in Angry Birds. Players slowly gain upgrades, making you more powerful, like in, say, Jetpack Joyride. And you find yourself using those upgrades to reach new levels just like you would in…every video game ever made.
For someone like me, who gave up mobile gaming after its first golden age, Poinpy is the perfect entry point. Familiar yet new, it’s a pastiche of something comfortable but does just enough to keep you on your toes.
Because Poinpy isn’t just about climbing, it’s about collecting the right kind of fruit, to feed a rampaging monster while a timer ticks ominously in the background. If you don’t collect the right kind of fruit fast enough, you lose and have to start over. The time limit creates a claustrophobic panic in the player and I can’t get enough of it.
Better yet, Poinpy is packed with flourishes that allow top players to pull off spectacular moments of skill. You have a limited number of jumps to collect the right kind of fruit to feed the rampaging monster, but it’s possible to break that limit by attacking the smaller monsters patrolling the levels. This provides the opportunity to create all sorts of clever combos, forcing you to come up with creative solutions on the fly in high-pressure situations. The more you play, the better you’ll be at manipulating the game’s limited set of tools, creating a sense of mastery unique to more efficiently designed video games.
Perhaps the strangest part of Poinpy: it’s a Netflix video game. It’s not just a Netflix funded game, it’s an exclusive game for Netflix subscribers. After downloading and opening the app on the App Store, players need to sign in to Netflix to play, which is just… incredibly interesting. I’m not entirely sure of the strategy there.
Would a game like Poinpy inspire people to sign up for Netflix? I can’t imagine it, unless it was the first of a vast library of Apple Arcade-style video games. It doesn’t come close to justifying Netflix’s monthly fee, but it’s a nice perk for existing Netflix subscribers. I would also love to see Netflix release more games like this in the future and help unique creators like Ojiro Fumoto bring their games to wider audiences.
Either way, if you have a Netflix subscription and are looking for a game that will take you back to the halcyon days of endless mobile gaming, you could do a lot worse than Poinpy.
