TOKYO, Jan 10 (Reuters) – The United States wants to deploy US Marine units around Japan’s Okinawa islands by 2026, arming them with missiles and lighter equipment to deter the military of China, and will discuss the plan with Tokyo in Washington, D.C., the Yomiuri. said a newspaper.

The United States has already told Japan about the reorganization, which will be announced after a two-by-two meeting in Washington on Wednesday between Japan’s defense and foreign ministers and their counterparts. theirs in the United States, the paper reported.

Officials at Japan’s defense ministry were not available for comment. A foreign ministry official declined to comment on the report, but said that Japan and the United States “will discuss issues regarding issues concerning the United States Forces Japan, including the realignment of the Forces of -United States of Japan”.

The creation of the new units, called Marine Littoral Regiments, is part of a major reorganization of the US Marine Corps described by its commander, General David Berger, in 2020 in his document Force Design 2030.

Berger told Reuters at the time that he wanted those units to work closely with Japan’s Self-Defense Forces to prevent easy access to the Pacific for China’s military.

In response to a question about the possible deployment of the new units, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a regular meeting on Tuesday that bilateral military cooperation between the United States and Japan “should not harm the interests of third parties and regional peace and stability.”

Under the littoral regiment concept, the Marines are cutting aircraft numbers, discarding most of their gun artillery and heavy armor in favor of smaller “dispersed” forces equipped with missiles and drones that can operate in contested areas.

Japan hosts 18,000 US Marines, the largest concentration outside the US. Most of them are based in bases on the main island of Okinawa, which is part of a chain that stretches along the edge of the East China Sea to about 100 km (62 miles) from Taiwan.

That large military presence of the United States has raised local resentment, with the government of Okinawa asking other parts of Japan to host some of the force. Although the reorganization may not increase the number of Marines in Okinawa, their spread could mean a wider presence along the island chain.
