The US has accused Iran’s arms manufacturers of complicity in Russia’s war in Ukraine, in violation of international law.

The United States has announced that it is sanctioning Iranian industries that produce ballistic missiles and drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which the US says have been used to facilitate Russia’s war in Ukraine.
In a press release on Friday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the sanctions would target seven people in leadership positions at Qods Aviation Industries, an Iranian UAV maker, and the Organization of Iran’s Aerospace Industries (AIO), which manages the country’s ballistic missile program.
“Iran has now become Russia’s main military sponsor,” Blinken said in the statement. “Iran must stop supporting Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression in Ukraine, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to disrupt and delay these transfers and impose costs on the actors involved in this activity.”
Iran is fueling Russia’s war in Ukraine with its supply of UAV technology. Today, the United States sanctioned seven people involved in Iran’s UAV and ballistic missile programs, programs that Moscow uses to attack critical infrastructure in Ukraine.

Relations between the US and Iran, already strained, have become increasingly strained as Iran improves its military ties with Russia. The US has claimed that Iranian drones are being used to wreak havoc in Ukraine, with civilians paying the highest price.
The United States has previously sanctioned Iranian entities involved in the “production and transfer of Iranian Shahed and Mohajer UAVs,” two drone models.
Kyiv and Moscow have used UAVs in their wartime efforts, sometimes for surveillance and sometimes for deadly strikes. Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Russia of planning a prolonged bombardment, relying on Iranian-made drones to “wear out” Ukraine.
Iran has previously denied providing drones to Russia for use in the Ukraine war, but in November, the country confirmed it had given a “limited number” of aerial explosives to Moscow. The explosives, Iran said, were delivered to Russia ahead of the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
In December, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Iran and Russia were moving toward a “full-fledged defense partnership” that would include Russian sales of defense systems air and future deliveries of fighter aircraft. Kirby also said Iran was considering setting up a drone production facility in Russia.
The United States has accused Iran of violating international law by failing to obtain United Nations Security Council approval for the sale of drones. “The Iranian regime’s military support for Russia is not only fueling the conflict in Ukraine, but has also led to violations of UN Security Council resolution 2231,” Blinken said in the statement Friday.
The Iranian government has taken a defiant stance on its drones and the issue of arms sales in general, touting the quality of its military products. He also said that international criticism is rooted in concerns that Iran could become a competitor for global arms sales.
In October, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said his country’s arms sales angered countries that “don’t want us to grow … to conquer markets.”
“Let the enemy be angry and die of anger,” he added.
The United States currently dominates the global arms market, with 40 U.S.-based companies making nearly $300 billion in arms sales by 2021, according to the International Peace Research Institute of ‘Stockholm. The United States has at times faced criticism for its weapons programs, which critics allege are used to prop up US allies even when they have poor human rights records.
