ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Larry Hogan hosted the last Korean-American Reception at the State House today. The governor was joined by First Lady Yumi Hogan, General Counsel Sei-Choong Kwon of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and prominent leaders of Maryland’s Korean American community to mark the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States in 1903.

“What began with the arrival of 100 Korean immigrants to Hawaii in 1903 has grown to a thriving population of over 1.8 million Korean Americans who now live, work and raise families in the United States,” said Governor Hogan. “Maryland has always been extremely proud of the special relationship we have with the ROK that we are working on through trade missions, sister country relationships, educational partnerships, and the opening of one of Korea’s few official Korean cities. At a ceremony today, Governor Hogan introduced a proclamation announcing Friday, January 13, 2023, as Korean-American Day in Maryland. The proclamation was presented to General Counsel Kwon in recognition of the invaluable contribution of the Korean American community to Maryland and the United States.
