Dec 24 (Reuters) – An Arctic blast that engulfed much of the United States on Saturday left more than 700,000 without power, at least 16 dead in weather-related car crashes and thousands stranded by flight cancellations.

Plunging temperatures were expected to bring the coldest Christmas Eve on record, and power systems across the country were strained due to growing demand for heat and damage related to -storm for transmission lines.

The latest outage numbers are a sharp drop from the 1.8 million US homes and businesses that were left without power as of early Saturday morning, according to the tracking site Poweroutage.us.

Many electricity companies continued to ask customers to conserve energy by not operating large appliances and turning off unnecessary lights.

Duke Energy ( DUK.N ) told customers by late Saturday afternoon that it had ended the 15-30 minute outages across North and South Carolina that had started earlier in the day until additional electricity was available.

The disruption has upended daily routines and vacation plans for millions of Americans during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

More than 2,700 US flights were canceled on Saturday, with total delays numbering more than 6,400, according to flight tracking service FlightAware. More than 5,000 flights were canceled on Friday, FlightAware said.

The American Automobile Association estimated that 112.7 million people will drive 50 miles (80 km) or more from home between December 23 and January 2. But the stormy weather that arrived at the weekend probably ended up keeping many people at home.

According to media reports, weather-related car accidents across the country have left at least 16 dead and hundreds stranded on icy and snowy roads.

In Erie County, in the state of New York, about 500 drivers were stranded in their vehicles on Friday night until Saturday morning, with the National Guard called to help with rescues, said the Executive of Erie County Mark Poloncarz to the media. At least one person was found dead in a car, he said.

“There’s no place for anyone to go, everything is closed, so just stay at home,” he told MSNBC.

“I know it’s really difficult because it’s Christmas Eve. But we’re having dozens and dozens of incidents,” he said in online information. “It’s just not safe.”

Blizzard conditions remained on Saturday for Buffalo, New York, and its surrounding county on the edge of Lake Erie in far western New York where by Sunday it will fall between 4 and 6 feet of snow, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

The city imposed a driving ban on Friday that remained in effect Saturday, and the three bridges that cross the border in the Buffalo area were closed to traffic coming from Canada.

Temperatures were forecast to top 7 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-13 Celsius) Saturday in Pittsburgh, surpassing the Christmas Eve high of 13 F, set in 1983, the NWS.

Cities in Georgia and South Carolina – Athens and Charleston – were also expected to record the highest Christmas Eve daytime temperatures, and Washington, D.C., was forecast to experience the most December 24th since -1989 onwards.

The record yuletide temperature forecast was predicted as a deep freeze threatened by dangerous wind chills gripped much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation.

“The cold will persist through Christmas,” said meteorologist Ashton Robinson Cook, at the NWS Weather Prediction Centre.

Minneapolis was the coldest place in America on Saturday at minus 6 degrees Fahrenheit. On Christmas morning, the coldest place will be Fargo, North Dakota at minus-20, Cook said.

He said it will begin to moderate from west to east across America, with the high plains and Central US returning to normal by Tuesday, but it will not warm up on the East Coast until -Thursday or Friday, he said.

“For now it’s staying cold,” he said.

The severe weather led authorities across the country to open warming centers in libraries and police stations while they scrambled to expand temporary shelters for the homeless. The challenge has been compounded by an influx of migrants crossing the US southern border by the thousands in recent weeks.

The National Weather Service said its map of existing or impending weather hazards “shows one of the largest extensions of winter weather warnings and advisories ever.”
