WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (Reuters) – The population of the United States accelerated in 2022 from an all-time low, driven by net international immigration, as growth began to recover from a slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday.

The country’s population grew 0.4% this year to 333.3 million, after almost stagnating at 0.1% in 2021 as the coronavirus exacerbated a trend of more subdued growth in previous years.

The year 2021 marked the first time since 1937 that the U.S. population grew by less than a million people, reflecting the lowest numerical growth since at least 1900, when the Census Bureau began annual population estimates.

Net international migration — the number of people moving in and out of the country — added about 1.01 million people between 2021 and 2022 and was the main driver of growth, the Census Bureau said in a statement Thursday. That compares to a net migration of more than 376,000 last year, suggesting a possible return to pre-pandemic levels.

Florida was the fastest growing state by 2022, with a population increase of 1.9% to about 22.2 million, according to Census Bureau figures.

“While Florida has often been among the states with the highest gains, this was the first time since 1957 that Florida was the state with the largest percentage increase in population,” said Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Census Bureau’s Population Division.

Eighteen states experienced population decline in 2022, compared to 15 and the District of Columbia the previous year.

California and Illinois experienced a six-digit decline in resident population. The declining population in both states reflected net migration to other states.
