MEXICO CITY — Today marks the bicentennial of bilateral relations between the United States and Mexico.
In honor of the ties that have united us for two centuries, the Special Adviser to the US President for the Americas Christopher Dodd and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marcelo Ebrard signed the Declaration of Bicentennial Friendship at the Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) in Mexico City. Along with US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, Special Counsel Dodd and Secretary Ebrard also opened an SRE art exhibit focusing on works by Mexican artists, Americans living in Mexico, and binational societies.
The bicentennial marks more than the relationship between our governments. It offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the ties that bind our people on both sides of our border.
Recent and Upcoming Events
During December, governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and various partners will host more than 200 events in Mexico and the United States to commemorate the bicentennial. They span 26 Mexican states, 19 U.S. states, as well as Washington, D.C., and include dozens of virtual events. We highlight:
• Lucha Libre Bicentennial Cup in Mexico City at Arena Mexico on December 9, featuring integrated Mexican and American wrestling teams. Read also : USA midfielder Adams joins Leeds from Leipzig.
• Bi-national broadcast of the documentary “Harry Crosby’s Travels” on PBS and Channel 22 about California photographer, explorer and historian Harry Crosby, whose life’s work captured images of the communities and landscapes of Baja California as an example of the spirit of mutual understanding and conservation between the United States and Mexico .
• In Ciudad Juarez, the US Consulate organized a 10-kilometer race on December 10, and on December 15 it will host a Bicentennial Posada with members of the Tarahumara community in Colonia Rarámura.
• On December 12, students, academics and business people will join officials from the US Consulate in Matamoros and the Mexican Consulate in Brownsville on the International Gateway Bridge for a binational salute.
• At Tijuana’s San Ysidro Port of Entry, Mayor Montserrat Caballero will unveil a 5-meter-tall statue commemorating the bicentennial during the week of December 12.
• On December 15, Monterrey will host a baseball game between the Monterrey Sultanes and the Mayos de Navojas in honor of the 200th anniversary.
• On December 15, the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles will open the installation “La Mesa Mexicana,” which highlights Mexico’s cultural influence in the United States.
These events, and many others, represent the multiple bonds we share. Through our bicentennial events, we celebrate the kinship between our people and create new narratives about how our nations view each other.
