The U.S. International Trade Administration, led by the Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, released the total volume of non-U.S. international visitors to the United States in July 2022, comparing it to July 2021.
Total US non-resident international visitors to the United States of 5,210,752 increased by 160.8% compared to July 2021 and increased to 67.6% of the total pre-COVID visitor numbers reported for July 2019. up from 64.2% last month.
The volume of overseas visitors in the United States of 2,589,898 increased by 199.7% since July 2021.
July 2022 marked the sixteenth consecutive month that total non-US international arrivals to the United States increased on a year-over-year (YOY) basis.
Of the top 20 U.S. tourist-generating countries, Colombia (with 89,385 visitors) and the Dominican Republic (with 45,460 visitors) were the only countries to report a decrease in visitors in July 2022 compared to July 2021, with -30.7 % and -0.1% change respectively.
The most international visitor arrivals were from Canada (1,467,348), Mexico (1,153,506), the United Kingdom (361,313), France (169,994) and Germany (163,675). Together, these 5 largest source markets accounted for 63.6% of all international arrivals.
International Departures from the United States
Total international departures by US citizens from the United States of 9,177,301 were up 63% from July 2021 and represented 85% of all departures in pre-pandemic July 2019.

Mexico recorded the highest volume of outbound visitors at 3,270,261 (35.6% of all departures in July and 42.8% year-to-date). Canada saw a significant year-over-year increase of 1,263%.
Year-over-year, Mexico (19,228,305) and the Caribbean (5,578,944) accounted for 55.2% of all U.S. citizen international visitor departures, down 2.3 percentage points from June 2022 year-over-year.
Europe YTD (8,570,790), the second largest volume of outbound visitors, is up 375% year-on-year and accounts for 19.1% of all departures. This was up 0.8 percentage points from June 2022’s year-to-date share of 18.3%.
