The United States is very concerned about what is happening in Burkina Faso. We have noticed that for the second time in eight months the military officers confirmed that they have destroyed the government and the National Assembly and suspended the constitution. We stand with our counterparts in ECOWAS, the African Union, and the European Union in condemning these actions and violence that are disrupting the agreed term of returning to an elected civilian government. We call on the rich and wealthy to ease the situation, prevent harm to citizens and soldiers, and return to the rule of law. The United States is closely monitoring this situation, and we call on all actors to exercise restraint. The United States stands with the people of Burkina Faso in their quest for democracy, peace, progress, and respect for human rights.
