The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of the United States and the Republic of Turkey, on the occasion of the Third Strategic Dialogue between the United States and Turkey.

The governments of the United States and Turkey held the third meeting of the strategic technical dialogue between the United States and Turkey on September 15, 2022 in Washington. US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Önal chaired the meeting. US Under Secretary of State for Policy Affairs Victoria Nuland also participated in the Dialogue. Based on their ongoing cooperation and previous discussions under the framework of the Strategic Technical Framework between the United States and Turkey, both reaffirmed their strong cooperation as partners and NATO Allies and engaged in substantive discussions on the issues international and regional strategic and bilateral cooperation areas.

They reviewed the broad, security, economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties that underlie the bilateral relationship between the United States and Turkey. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace and stability and to deepening and strengthening US-Turkey defense cooperation. They welcomed the recent growth of their business, and reaffirmed their commitment to developing their economic partnership in every possible way. They also emphasized that the United States and Turkey are jointly supporting the health of the global community as well as protecting food and energy. The delegates also reaffirmed their joint efforts to work on energy development, access, efficiency, and independence.

The two sides discussed the political development of the region and discussed the importance of strengthening the Transatlantic relationship. And they underlined the need to fight against terrorism in all its forms and symbols. The delegates reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity and discussed ways to further strengthen NATO coordination. The United States welcomed Turkey’s efforts to broker the Black Sea Grain Agreement in Istanbul for the safe passage of Ukrainian agricultural products across the Black Sea. The two delegations were looking at ways to cooperate with different countries in the world, such as the Middle East and Africa, and underlined the importance of peace development in the South Caucasus.

Both sides welcomed the continuation of the strengthening, honest exchange on these and other issues and agreed to continue the visits of the senior leaders in the future.

The United States and Turkey hope to review progress and explore new areas of cooperation during the next round of talks.
