The war of words comes after the US announced military aid worth $2.2bn to Ukraine and neighboring countries ‘potentially at risk of future Russian aggression’.

Russia has alleged that some Western weapons earmarked for Ukraine will end up in the hands of “criminal gangs and terrorists” and make the global security threat even greater.

Comments by Russia’s UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya on Thursday portrayed military aid as a threat to European and global security, accusing Ukrainian military officials – without providing evidence – of planning to transfer some weapons to the black market.

The statement came after the United States announced $2.2bn worth of military aid to Ukraine and neighboring countries “potentially at risk of future Russian aggression”, and a separate $675m package of heavy weapons, ammunition and armored vehicles for Ukraine.

“A significant proportion of these weapons found themselves in the hands of smugglers right from the warehouse,” said Nebenzya.

“On the darknet, you can find all kinds of offers to buy these weapons. We have seen a similar situation in the Balkans and the Middle East where Western military arsenals are then exported back to Europe and used by criminal groups in European territory or find their way into the hands of terrorists.

Izumi Nakamitsu, head of UN disarmament, warned on Thursday that the large-scale transfer of weapons to conflict-affected zones, such as Ukraine, “raises many problems including the potential for diversion”.

‘Not gone to plan’

Richard Mills, deputy US ambassador to the United Nations, mocked Russia’s efforts to discredit military aid to Ukraine. Read also : The New United States of New England.

“The United States is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend their lives, freedom and democracy. We do not hide our support. Ukraine and all UN member states have the right to defend themselves and we will not stop our support for Ukraine just because Russia is frustrated that its efforts to change the regime not planned yet,” Mills said.

“Russian claims that the United States and the West are escalating and prolonging this conflict are false.”

Barbara Woodward, Britain’s UN Ambassador, also put Russia on the spot for trying to buy ammunition from North Korea, in violation of existing UN sanctions.

This comes after a recently released US intelligence report stated that Russia’s defense ministry is buying millions of rockets and artillery shells from North Korea for its war in Ukraine.

“We have seen that Russia is struggling to maintain equipment stocks exacerbated by component shortages as a result of international sanctions, which aim to end the war. And now Russia is turning to Iran to supply UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] and, in violation of UN sanctions, to North Korea to supply ammunition,” Woodward said.

So far 6,900 NLAW, Javelin, Brimstone and other anti-tank weapons, as well as 16,000 artillery rounds, six Stormer vehicles equipped with Starstreak anti-aircraft missile launchers and hundreds of missiles have been sent to Ukraine.
