MANILA, Aug 15 (Reuters) – The Philippines is looking to buy Chinook helicopters from the United States, after scrapping a 12.7 billion pesos ($227.35 million) deal with Russia to avoid sanctions, Manila’s ambassador to Washington said. Monday.

In June, just days before President Rodrigo Duterte ended his six-year term, the Philippines scrapped a deal to buy 16 Russian Mi-17 military transport helicopters out of fear of US sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“This cancellation of this agreement is mainly caused by the war in Ukraine. Although there are sanctions expected to come to us, from the United States and western countries, it is clear that it is not in our interest to continue to implement this agreement,” representative Jose. Manuel Romualdez told reporters in a special forum.

Romualdez said the Chinooks will replace existing hardware used for military mobility and disaster preparedness in the Southeast Asian country.

The Philippines is pursuing negotiations with Russia to recover its $38 million worth of helicopters, the delivery of which was supposed to begin in November next year, or 24 months after signing the contract.

The Philippines is at the end of a five-year, 300-billion-pesos modernization of old military equipment that includes warships from World War II and helicopters used by the United States in the Vietnam War.

Apart from the military agreements, the Philippines, under the new President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, also wants to expand economic reforms with the United States including in the fields of manufacturing, digital infrastructure and clean energy, including modular nuclear power, Romualdez said.
