Kansas, a conservative and mostly Republican state, is the first US state to vote on abortion rights since the US Supreme Court on June 24 overturned Roe v Wade, a constitutionally protected abortion right for nearly 50 years.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden, who hailed the abortion rights victory in the state, said on Twitter:
“This is an important victory for Kansas, but also for every American who believes that women should be able to make their own health decisions without government interference.”
The referendum held by the Kansas Republican Legislature on Tuesday, August 2nd had a great turnout. The campaign was tense and bitter, witnessing vandalism of churches and stolen yard signs.
The “No Campaign,” designed to protect abortion rights, won the referendum with 62 percent of the vote, testifying to a million-dollar loss to the Catholic Church, which contributed more than $3 million to the abolition of abortion rights in the country.
Kansans for Life, which supported the yes vote, said on July 27 that abortion bans would prevent late-term abortions, lack of parental consent and taxpayer funding, even though they are absent from the state constitution.
