WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement about the Biden Administration’s announcement of plans to host the second U.S.-African Leaders Summit from December 13-15, 2022:
“Today’s Biden Administration’s announcement of the date for the second US-African Leaders Summit in December has been long awaited. This summit is an important opportunity for our African partners to engage directly with senior leaders from the US government, private sector, African diaspora and civil society. It shouldn’t take eight months from the announcement of the second summit to set a date.
“As part of its consultations with Congress, I expect the administration to incorporate the recommendations of my bipartisan resolution that the Senate passed on the US-Africa summit into its planning. I also hope that the African leaders invited to the summit are chosen because of their shared values and commitment to partnering with the United States.”
On March 9, Risch and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced a bipartisan resolution, S.Res.538, declaring support for the second US-African Leaders Summit as a significant opportunity to strengthen relations between the United States and our African Partners. , and to develop areas of common interest. On May 26, the US Senate passed the resolution.
