Former State Secretary Mike Pompeo joined a group of high-profile international mourners over the loss of Shinzo Abe, a former Japanese prime minister who was assassinated on Thursday by a single gunman.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Pompeo called Abe “the perfect partner in the United States.”
Pompeo has known Abe since the time of Pompeo Congress and told Fox News Digital, “It is sad and dangerous to have a leader, a world leader, killed while continuing to present a case to the Japanese people. “He is out on a campaign. To exercise his political rights. That is something we should all be aware of when it comes to political unrest.”
Abe was assassinated while campaigning in Nara district for his central Liberal Democratic Party base ahead of Sunday’s election of the country’s upper house of parliament.

Pompeo has described his relationship with the late Japanese leader.

“He was a perfect partner of the United States when we started working on our economy together and provided the sanctions that we would need to prevent the Chinese Communist Party,” Pompeo explained. “I will miss him. The world, in particular, will miss him.”

Abe was a strong believer in the power of U.S.-Japan friendship and ended his career of welcoming, immersing and negotiating with American politicians.

He knew that a prosperous United States and good relations with us made things better for his people. ”
