HERE IT WAS, a statement from a Florida politician – or was it a Texan: “The sanctity of our Sabbath, our home […] and ultimately even our right to teach our own children in our own schools basic facts and truths [have been torn away from us. “

Then a bold manifesto echoing a well-known campaign slogan: “We believe […] that we have the right to make America American and for Americans” in a nation “disorganized and helpless before the invasion of aliens and foreign ideas.”

He continued: liberals have become “completely academic, lost all contact with the common people, denied its instincts and common sense” because they believe, “those who can produce should bear the unsuitable.” Worst of all, this has risen to a terrible momentum, attacking our legacy as bigot instead of noble, racist instead of honor. “This became a world without moral standards.”

Each of these quotes is from Hiram Wesley Evans’ 1926 article in the North American Review, “The Clan’s Fight for Americanism.” Evans was the imperial wizard of the Ku Klux Klan of that decade and its great proselytizer, Fox News commentator of his time.

Yet the words sound newer. A 2022 University of Massachusetts Amherst poll found that 66 percent of Republicans accept “white substitution theory” that fully or partially agrees with the claim that the Democratic Party is trying to replace the current electorate with voters from poorer countries around in the world.” The Florida lieutenant governor has openly accused Disney of “indoctrinating” and “sexualizing children” with its “non-secret agenda.”
