The United States advance to the next round of FIBA World Cup Qualifiers after winning Group D by 13 points after six games. Xavier Munford set the tone early for the US scoring 24 points in the 87-64 victory.
USA pull away from Cuba early
The Americans came in on the night knowing they could end the first round of stage action group in the qualifying games at the top of the standings with Monday night’s victory. Cuba, on the other hand, did not win a game and was looking for some consolation after being eliminated earlier in the tournament.

Cuba looked good, as is often the case during the tournament, in the first quarter. They defended well, hit the boards hard and were ahead 16-14 after the first ten minutes of play in Chihuahua, Mexico.
Munford makes it happen
Xavier Munford and the rest of Team USA responded quickly with a 14-2 run to start the second quarter, and never looked back from that point. The lead rose 14 points in the second quarter, and while Cuba’s mini – run was right before half – time, the last US team in Group D was on the run of the second half.

Despite a cold start to the game, USA ended the night shooting 50% off the pitch and hitting 12 out of their 35 three-point attempts. Cuba struggled from the pitch but kept themselves in the game for most of the first half with some amazing rebounding. Yoel Cubilla and Jasiel Rivero helped the Cubans win the 45-37 table battle and Cuba were on the edge on the 18-10 offensive programs.
USA joins Mexico and Puerto Rico in next round

Everyone is expecting the United States to win the World Cup to be held in 2023, but they will have to do it against a tough field for new teams from North and South America.
