United States to provide $345 million for Kenya’s HIV response

Nairobi, Kenya, June 30, 2022: The US Embassy in Nairobi announces the approval of US$345 million (KSH 40.658 billion) through the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief Program ( PEPFAR) to support the HIV response in Kenya. Funds allocated through the PEPFAR National Operational Plan (COP) 2022 will be implemented from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, in support of critical solutions that enable Kenya to maintain control of the epidemic.

The PEPFAR National Operational Plan 2022 was approved today via a virtual meeting by the US Department of State Office of the US Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy Ambassador John Nkengasong, in the presence of the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Ms. the Board of Governors of the Health Committee, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, CEO of the National AIDS Control Board, Dr. Ruth Laibon-Masha, as well as representatives from civil society, the faith-based health network, the private sector, and the UN Global Fund and Family.

“Since the inception of PEPFAR, Kenya has been at the forefront and leader in the global response to HIV. We have much to learn from its success and I look forward to deepening this productive partnership during my time as ambassador,” said the newly appointed US Global AIDS Coordinator and Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy, Ambassador John Nkengasong.

Kenya is one of the few countries that is moving closer to successfully controlling the HIV epidemic and meeting the UNAIDS 95:95:95 targets. PEPFAR funding will ensure that Kenya’s HIV response reaches all populations and sustains achievements in HIV control. Joint commitments by the Government of Kenya, the Global Fund and PEPFAR will build a strong foundation for achieving sustainability in all aspects of the program.

“The journey to achieving the approval of Kenya’s COP22 has been marked by excellent collaboration with all stakeholders and we are confident that the jointly developed plan will make a real difference to the people of Kenya, especially Kenyans living with HIV. ,” noted the acting vice president.
