Wealth cushions adverse economic shocks, such as job loss, and helps fund investments, such as college and graduate training. Wealth inequality is much higher than income inequality in the United States. Understanding the dynamics of wealth accumulation may be important in narrowing the wealth gap. Here we study intragenerational wealth mobility using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID).
Using measures of individual wealth, we first study relative wealth mobility in years of primary wealth accumulation and a ten-point increase in individuals’ wealth percentiles in their early thirties leading to a 5.9-point increase in their wealth percentile in their late fifties. (ie, the slope of the ratings is 0.59).
We also show that wealth mobility rates are highest between ages and 35 years. Finally, we consider how wealth mobility differs between socioeconomic groups. Black Americans experience far less upward mobility of wealth and far more downward mobility of wealth than white Americans, subject to the same initial wealth.
For those with median wealth in their early thirties, black Americans dropped to the 38th percentile of wealth in their late fifties while white Americans rose to the 57th percentile of wealth in their late fifties, on average. flat. We found a similar pattern based on educational attainment and income level. In total, our results demonstrate flexible wealth dynamics in early adulthood which then reinforces and reinforces existing racial and class inequalities.
