SEOUL, June 27 (Reuters) – North Korea has accused the United States of forming a military alliance like NATO in Asia, claiming that the US ambassadors’ goal of overthrowing the North Korean government forced it to build a strong defense base.

North Korea’s criticism comes amid concerns that it may be preparing for its first nuclear test in five years and following a recent agreement between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and US President Joe Biden to send more US weapons if it is deemed necessary to stop the South.

“While conducting military exercises with Japan and South Korea, the United States is taking full steps to launch NATO for Asia,” the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement on its website Sunday.

The United States also conducted exercises with South Korean troops that included a US airline pilot, for the first time in more than four years.

North Korea, which has been conducting regular examinations this year, reiterated its claim that such drills are in preparation for a coup d’état.

“This shows the US rhetoric deception of ‘diplomatic engagement’ and ‘dialogue without preconditions’, while at the same time reiterating that there is no change in US attempts to overthrow our system by force,” the North Korean minister said. .

It did not comment specifically on its nuclear or missile programs but said US hostility forced it to develop its own defenses.

“The truth … makes us feel the need to do everything — to try to develop a stronger power so that we can overcome all forms of hostility toward the United States,” he said.

The United States is insisting that North Korea renounce its nuclear weapons and remains willing to meet with North Korean officials “at any time without circumstance” to discuss the issue. North Korea has rejected the offer.

The criticism of North Korea came a day before the South Korean president went to a NATO summit in Spain, South Korea’s first president to do so.

South Korea, with the aim of strengthening its ties with NATO and undertaking a major international security mission, plans to suspend a NATO delegation at its Brussels base, South Korea’s national security adviser said last week.
