Today, President Biden announces his intention to appoint Marilynn Malerba as treasurer of the United States. Malerba, who is the head of the Mohegan tribe, will be the first Indian to hold the position.
The Treasurer in the United States directly oversees the U.S. Mint, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Fort Knox, and is a key liaison with the Federal Reserve. Chief Malerba will also act as a senior adviser to the Minister of Finance in the areas of community development and public engagement.
Marilynn Malerba is the head of the Mohegan Tribe, a lifetime appointment made by the Tribe’s Council of Elders. Prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer, she served as chair of the Mohegan Tribal Council, and served on the Tribal Government as CEO of Health and Human Services. Prior to his work for the Mohegan Tribe, Malerba had a long career as a registered nurse, eventually serving as Director of Cardiology and Pulmonary Services at Lawrence & amp; Memorial Hospital. In addition, Malerba currently serves as a member of the Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee. This seven-member committee advises the Minister of Finance on important matters related to Indian taxation, training of Internal Revenue Service field agents and offers training and technical assistance to Native Americans as financial officers.
