Frontier Airlines on Tuesday announced a great deal for frequent flyers: a $399 summer ticket that will allow unlimited flights anywhere on its route map for nearly five months later this year.

It comes with a big catch — several of them expensive — that make the promotion the best deal for the most flexible travelers, especially if they’re traveling light, with no checked or carry-on bags to incur fees. The returns are likely to be diminishing for others who only want a few trips during the warmer months.

Still, if handled smartly, “Wild!” The Pass offers unlimited access from Denver International Airport, where Frontier is the third-largest carrier by market share, to destinations coast to coast, plus Mexico and a new direct flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The pass is valid between May 2 and September 30, but the first catch is that domestic flights can only be booked a day in advance, while international flights are available up to 10 days in advance – subject to availability. And pass holders are still responsible for a 1 cent fare for each segment plus government and airport imposed taxes and fees, now  $14.90 per domestic flight.

The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier’s unlimited pass, first released last fall as an annual version, has turned heads in the airline industry.

Not least because it offers the airline a way to fill empty seats that would likely be empty.

“If Frontier doesn’t try to get too stingy, they’ll come out smelling like roses because they’re offering something fun and unique while generating a ton of extra revenue on seats that would otherwise almost certainly go unsold,” said a post on Cranky Flier, a website for industry news and opinion, after the annual pass was released in November.

Frontier says the $399 summer fare will be offered “on a limited basis” and could increase. Ever since the airline began selling its annual “Go Wild!” pass in November, its price increased from $599 to $999. Spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz declined to say how many annual tickets the airline has sold.

Travelers using either pass must work around blackout dates, mostly around major holidays. In addition to the taxi, they will pay extra if they want to select a seat (starting at $11), check a bag, or carry a bag (either can start at $40 or more each way, but it depends on the flight and when the fee is paid). Like other airlines, Frontier does not charge for personal items, including a purse, laptop bag or small child’s backpack.

While passholders can book almost any seat that’s still available during a short notice period, Frontier also says it doesn’t guarantee that the final seat on the plane can be claimed, adding some uncertainty.

And pass holders will have to pay attention to their expiration date. Frontier’s terms say it will automatically renew at the “retail” price of each pass — currently set at $999 for a summer pass and $1,999 for an annual pass.

Frontier touts the summer pass as an opportunity to explore, as long as travelers respect many restrictions.

“For people with flexible schedules, this is a great opportunity to spend a truly epic summer and then some, soaking up the rays at the beach, exploring national parks and visiting new cities,” said Daniel Shurz, the airline’s senior vice president of commercial travel, in a press release. .
