Fodor’s Travel named Maui one of its 10 2023 No List destinations that tourists should reconsider this year.

The travel publication lists 10 regions, from Antarctica to Italy, at risk of environmental damage from overtourism and climate change. The list divided these places into three categories: “nature attractions that could use a break to heal and rejuvenate; cultural hotspots that are plagued by overcrowding and resource depletion; and locations around the world that were immediately and dramatically affected by water crises.”

Maui was singled out in the latter category, along with the Southern European Watershed and Western America, as “suffering water crises” destinations.

The publication noted how the debate over water restrictions in Maui reached a boiling point last year as soon as Upcountry residents were ordered to conserve water – or face $500 fines if they used water for “non-essential” purposes such as irrigation and washing cars. At the same time, “no such restrictions have been placed on resorts in South and Central Maui, many of which boast swimming pools, expansive lawns and golf courses,” the article states.

The publication continues to say that Native Hawaiians “pay the price for a burgeoning tourism industry” in other aspects of everyday life. The cost of living has increased with the short-term rental boom, the publication wrote, which is causing more and more people to experience homelessness.

“This year’s No List does not serve as a boycott, ban or cancellation of any kind, but a call to travelers to wisely consider the choices we make,” the article reads. “We can have a positive impact on this world we love so much.”
