Traveling is one of the most meaningful experiences you can have in your life. It’s an opportunity to see the world differently and learn about new cultures.

But what are the cities you must visit before you die? It can be difficult to narrow down the choices. As a travel journalist with more than 20 years of experience, I have recently interviewed more than 50 enthusiasts, experts and travel agents. I asked each of them for their #1 choice.

Here are the most popular answers:

1. Paris, France

Paris, the City of Light, was the overwhelming favorite. To see also : Bernardo Silva: Pep Guardiola wants Manchester City midfielder to stay but isn’t sure he will.

“I love the ambiance, the culture and the overall romantic vibe,” says Susan Sherren, founder of luxury travel planning service Couture Trips. But crepes and croissants barely scratched the surface of what the city has to offer.

The Eiffel Tower is not the only landmark in Paris, although it is magnificent. Tourists can climb to the top and enjoy a glass of champagne for 45.80 euros.

Paris is made for walks and magical landscapes, whether it’s the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre or lesser-known places like the Musée de l’Orangerie, where you can see a large collection of Monet wall paintings.

Do you like shopping? Head to the exclusive boutiques on the island of Île Saint-Louis. On the honeymoon? Go on a romantic cruise along the calm canal of St. Martin.

2. Rome, Italy

The history of the Eternal City makes it a truly special destination. See the article : Montgomery County Maryland.

“Visiting the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel should be on your bucket list, right above enjoying pasta with a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino,” says Kaleigh Kirkpatrick, founder of travel planning service The Shameless Tourist.

Kaleigh Kirkpatrick calls Rome her must-see destination thanks to its vintage attractions — and ice cream!

With Rome’s many famous pizzerias (Kirkpatrick recommends Pinsere) and its once-in-a-lifetime sights, she always tells clients to check out the underground ruins.

“Rome currently exists with three older ‘cities’ buried beneath, and archaeologists have discovered numerous churches, houses and aqueducts for tourists to visit,” she says.

Step into Rome’s history with a tour of the Parco degli Acquedotti, a public park just outside the city center, or see the underground catacombs dating back to the second century.

3. New York City, U.S.

Jonathan de Araujo, owner of The Vacationeer travel agency, calls the Big Apple “the city of superlatives. Read also : It is a lifestyle by the lake! Welcome to the new The Lakeside Journal, which serves Little Elm & The Colony!.”

“It has the best pizza, the best bagels, the best cheesecake, the best shows and more,” he says.

Just a short walk from the 9/11 Museum, tourists from New York can take a ferry to visit the Statue of Liberty.

Along with classic landmarks like the Empire State Building and Times Square, he also recommends the 9/11 Memorial Museum. “Now it’s as much a part of New York history as the Statue of Liberty,” he says.

Other places to visit: The New York Public Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York Botanical Garden, and a rotating schedule of award-winning Broadway shows.

4. Cape Town, South Africa

Tom Marchant, founder of luxury travel company Black Tomato, calls Cape Town “the perfect destination for thrill seekers”.

“The view of the city can be seen from many angles, such as flying a kite over Table Mountain, driving over the hair-raising Chapman’s Peak or staying in a cliffside villa,” he says.

Cape Town is beautiful from any angle, especially from the tops of the surrounding mountains.

Cape Town’s natural splendor is best exemplified by the Cape of Good Hope National Park, he adds, “which can be explored by kayak, or Boulders Beach, home to the infamous penguin colony.”

If you’re not looking for that kind of adventure, there are also a number of fun, low-key options: “The region’s towering cliffs and peaks are ideal for remote picnicking, while Long Street and Cape Malay come alive for dining and nightlife.”

5. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

“No other city in the world combines natural beauty, cosmopolitan glamour, an interesting dining scene, a beach holiday atmosphere and incredible nightlife all in one,” says Manny Salorio, founder of Go Ask a Local.

It also tends to be cheaper compared to some of the other cities on this list.

Rio’s natural beauty and colorful urban life make it a must-visit destination for Manny Salorio.

You can spend your entire trip on the legendary beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, or visit world-famous destinations such as Christ the Redeemer (the famous Art Deco statue of Jesus) and the Maracanã stadium, one of the world’s largest football stadiums.

Tijuca National Park, the largest urban forest in the world and home to more than 350 animals, offers incredible scenery on a jeep or ATV ride.

And don’t forget to explore the city’s vibrant restaurant and bar scene, where you can dance to live Bossa Nova and Samba music.

6. Tokyo, Japan

For cosplay fashion, futuristic technology and Buddhist temples, head to Tokyo. The vibrant city is filled with iconic landmarks, such as the 2,080-foot-tall Tokyo Skytree and the ancient Senso-ji Temple.

Sensoji Temple’s Kaminarimon — or “Thunder Gate” — was first built about 1,000 years ago.

Cultural experiences include participating in a tea ceremony or wandering the narrow streets of Golden Grove lined with bars.

But even an average dinner out feels special in Tokyo, says Jack Ezon, founder of travel agency EMBARK Beyond.

“Whether it’s the art of predicting service, obsessive cleanliness or sublime culinary experiences, Tokyo delivers the vibe of any world capital with a completely unique approach,” he says.

7. Istanbul, Turkey

Known for its Byzantine architecture like the Hagia Sophia, Ottoman cuisine and the Grand Bazaar, a covered market with more than 4,000 shops, Mind Over Matter Travel blogger and regular backpacker Elaina Vieira calls Istanbul “a must-see destination for everyone.”

Elaina Vieira says Istanbul should be on everyone’s travel bucket list, especially for its unique Byzantine architecture.

“The first word that comes to mind when I think of Istanbul is ‘chaos,’ but in a good way,” she says.

“When exploring the city, passengers will experience a sensory overload of different sights, sounds and smells that only fuel excitement for further exploration.”
