SINGAPORE, Jan 6 (Reuters) – Southeast Asia’s tourist economies will be the main beneficiaries of China’s lifting of travel bans as they have avoided the pre-entry COVID-19 tests Europe, Japan and the United States are imposing on Chinese visitors. .

Even as the virus hits its 1.4 billion people, the world’s second-largest economy opened its borders from Sunday, a move that promises to unleash waves of tourists looking to distract themselves after three years of strict restrictions at home.

Newly shifted Chinese tourists will opt for “minimum hassle” and head for destinations that don’t require testing, which in turn benefits Southeast Asia, said CIMB economist Song Seng Wun.

“The busier the regional airports, the better it is for their economy,” he added.

While Australia, Britain, India, Japan and the United States are among countries requiring negative COVID-19 tests from incoming Chinese, Southeast Asian countries, from Cambodia to Indonesia and Singapore, have all rejected the requirement.

Except for aircraft waste water virus testing by Malaysia and Thailand, the 11 countries in the region will treat Chinese travelers like any other.

“We do not take a discriminatory attitude (against) any country,” said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Interest in the region was growing even before news of the lack of test requirements.

As many as 76% of Chinese travel agents ranked Southeast Asia as their top destination when outbound travel resumed, according to a survey released in December by the ITB China trade show.

WELCOME BACK

The region is home to many tourism-reliant economies with the Chinese usually the biggest visitors to the paradise of beaches, luxury malls and casinos all of which have been hit hard by their absence in recent years. Now, their tourism industry is preparing to welcome back Chinese tourists.

In 2019, 155 million Chinese traveled overseas, spending $254.6 billion, or close to Vietnam’s GDP, said Citi, whose researchers expect a “meaningful recovery” in mass tourism to begin in the second quarter of 2023.

In Vietnam, nearly a third of the 18 million foreign arrivals in 2019 were from China, while about a fifth of Singapore’s international arrivals were Chinese which cost S$900 million ($671 million).

Thailand expects to welcome 5 million Chinese tourists this year, or about half of 10.99 million tourists in 2019. Neighboring Malaysia is projecting 1.5 million to 2 million Chinese tourists this year compared to 3 million before the pandemic.

And the Association of Malaysian Tour and Travel Agents is preparing road shows in Chinese cities to woo visitors, said its vice president, Ganeesh Rama.

FEW HEALTH WORRIES

Officials downplayed health concerns expressed by other countries, such as the United States’ concern over insufficient information and fears that more cases in China could give rise to new variants of the virus.

Singapore says it has high population immunity, as around 40% of the population has been infected with the coronavirus and 83% have been vaccinated, while it has increased healthcare capacity. See the article : China’s video game revenue has fallen for the first time amid restrictions.

Karen Grépin, a public health professor at the University of Hong Kong, agrees with that approach, adding, “Every day, the country imports thousands of COVID-19 cases from around the world.”

In Bali, Ida Bagus Agung Parta, chairman of the resort island’s tourism board, said it would “boost our defenses”, as workers took their second dose of the vaccine this month.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, an ally of Beijing, described other countries’ testing requirements as “propaganda” designed to “scare people”.

“Whatever other countries want to do, that’s their right,” Hun Sen said in a recent speech. “But for Cambodia, this is an invitation to the Chinese: Chinese tourists, come to Cambodia.”
