WASHINGTON — International travel this holiday season is expected to reach peak levels this holiday season, prompting even more preparation. To facilitate the travel experience, US Customs and Protection (CBP) will host a Facebook Live event on Monday at 2 p.m.

During the event, a team of experts from the CBP Field Operations Office will provide live answers to CBP travel questions. Features will include travel tips to improve your travel experience, including:

1. Prepare your documents. Before traveling to the United States or returning from international travel, travelers have the following items:

2. Facial Expressions. Travelers should be prepared to have their photo taken by a CBP officer during a proper screening process at the time of entry. Known as Ease of Arrival, travelers can now have their identity verified through a secure, contactless facial recognition system that further secures and streamlines travel and entry into the United States. The biometric facial recognition process takes only a few seconds and is more than 98 percent accurate while protecting travelers’ privacy. US citizens can voluntarily participate in the immigration process, but the process is required for most non-US citizens. More information about CBP’s use of immigration and immigration procedures for US citizens can be found here.

3. Explore your future. US citizens planning to travel outside the US for the holidays should visit www.state.gov/travelers for destination information. Each country has its own COVI.D-19 and safety restrictions, so checking this information ahead of time will make your travel experience easier.

4. Mobile application. Travelers are encouraged to use CBP’s free mobile app, which will help reduce wait times. US citizens and Canadian B1/B2 immigrants can download Mobile Passport Control to submit their passport and travel information using a mobile device to have their information ready for their next international trip. Additionally, non-U.S. nationals traveling to or seeking entry to the United States can download the CBP One mobile application to apply for an I-94 up to seven days prior to travel. CBP One can also be used to issue advance notices if travelers need to inspect agricultural and organic products when they arrive at an airport in the United States. Disclosure categories will include:

·       Organic products that require approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Animals, especially birds and dogs, along with travelers in various fields that carry the potential of introducing foreign animal diseases into the United States or other public health issues.

·       Cleaning and washing of shoes

Both applications can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

5. Prepare the ESTA or I-94. Although having a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization is not a requirement to enter the United States through a land border, nationals and citizens of the Visa Waiver Program must have a valid ESTA to use the CBP One I-94 Apply feature. CBP encourages these travelers to obtain ESTA approval to take advantage of the time savings provided by using CBP One or the CBP I-94 website. With ESTA, these travelers can apply for an I-94 prior to arrival and avoid filling out Form I-94W at the port of entry.

6.  Report your food, money, and memories. US citizens and non-citizens must declare everything they bring into the US from abroad, even in the customs office. Certain items, such as ivory, turtle products, and certain foods and plants are prohibited in the United States. Visit the United States Department of Agriculture website for more information. Certain foods, goods and items with a total value of $10,000 or more may be brought into the United States but must be declared on a US CBP customs form. Failure to do so may result in severe financial penalties and the loss of your property.

7. Avoid fakes. Be careful when buying from street vendors or other illegal shops during the holidays. These things often support criminal activities, violate intellectual property rights, and can be unhealthy for users. More information on intellectual property rights can be found here. Please note that CBP officers may search you and your belongings without a warrant.

8. Consider job isolation. Items brought abroad for personal use or as gifts are eligible for duty exemption. If you are returning them for resale, they are not eligible for the duty exemption. More information on job exceptions can be found here.

9. Consider your medications. Be careful when traveling with medications. Many foreign-made drugs are not approved for use in the United States and are not approved in the country. When traveling abroad, bring only the medicine you will need, and make sure it is in the original container.

The CBP Facebook Live event is open to the public. For more information on CBP’s national travel efforts, follow CBP on Twitter or visit the CBP website.
