1. Embrace the cost savings of fall travel

Fall is a great time to cash in on lower travel costs. Fewer travelers and less demand make autumn a cheaper time to travel.

“Travelling in the fall is actually my favorite time to travel. See the article : 5 new Netflix releases everyone will be watching this weekend. Summer crowds have reduced, so you’re not shoulder to shoulder with other tourists, and prices are generally lower for flights and accommodations,” says Matt Kepnes, author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day and the Nomadic Matt website.

Fall and October, in particular, are beautiful times of year to travel; the changing seasons and cool temperatures make it the perfect time for a scenic outdoor trip.

“October often has the best weather around the world,” says Sarah Stocking, destinations editor for Lonely Planet. “Less crowds and great weather, nothing better than that.”

Fall is a great time to travel with lower hotel and airfare costs.

Outdoor activities are fun and affordable while traveling in the fall. There will also be fewer people vying for equipment hire and fewer people congregating on rivers, lakes, roads, or trails.

“Come out,” Stocking said.

If you prefer something less heavy, head to the outdoor markets and street food stalls and sample local produce and cuisine. Not sure if there’s a market nearby? Check with the local tourist information center for information but many markets happen on Saturday mornings and run into the late afternoon.

“Autumn is harvest season, and farmers’ markets are overflowing. Plus, it’s a great way to get into some of the local culture,” said Stocking.

Find free outdoor entertainment. You may not have to pay anything to listen to a local band in the town square. Keep your eyes and ears open for local entertainment. Look for signs in town squares, city visitor centers and do a quick search online. You can also ask the locals. They know their city better than anyone.

“So many cities have free concerts in parks and squares, lots of free outdoor movie nights and open mic nights,” Stocking said.

Flexibility with your travel dates and destinations will help you save on travel costs.

If you want to travel to a certain place, it may be more difficult to get a reasonable price. But if you loosen up your travel plans and go where the deal is, you’ll save money.

“For the best deals, be flexible with your travel dates and, ideally, your destination,” says Kepnes. your rigid plan.”

5. Choose affordable locations for travel

Some locations are cheaper for tourists. Choosing one of these locations for an upcoming trip is a great way to save money.

“When it comes to balancing affordability and security, you can’t beat Southeast Asia. Thailand, in particular, is very cheap and very safe and has something for everyone,” Kepnes said. “And, while Europe is generally considered a more expensive destination, countries like Portugal, Greece, Romania and Albania make a visit to Europe very affordable without having to compromise on quality or safety.”

6. Sign up for travel deals websites

Not sure how to find the best travel deals? Let the website do it for you. Airfarewatchdog and Cheapflights are some of the travel sites that offer airfare deals.

Kepnes prefers Scott’s Cheap Flights. “To save on airfare, you should sign up for a deal website like Scott’s Cheap Flights,” says Kepnes. I’ve saved hundreds of flights thanks to the deals they’ve found.”

Today, every opportunity to save gas is important.

Any way to save money on gas is greatly appreciated. Kepnes recommends Gas Buddy, an app that finds the cheapest gas prices near you.

“If you’re going on a longer trip, sign up for the monthly program; it costs $9.99 but will save you up to 40 cents per gallon,” Kepnes said. “It pays for itself very quickly.”

Getting a gas credit card is another way to save money at the pump. You can get cash back or get reward points. These days every little bit helps.

8. Get a travel credit card

With a travel credit card, you can get free travel, free accommodation through spending your credit card, and free annual travel credit.

“You can get free flights and free hotel stays for just your normal day-to-day expenses, allowing you to drastically cut the cost of your next trip,” says Kepnes.

With the best travel gift cards, you get many additional perks such as travel accident insurance, trip cancellation insurance, and coverage if your luggage arrives damaged or lost. All will protect you if something goes wrong with your trip.

Staying in hostels is a good way to save money, especially if you’re a light packer and stay out all day.

Want to lower your travel accommodation costs? Stay in a budget friendly hostel.

“You can save a lot of money by choosing to stay in a dorm in a cool hostel instead of an expensive private hotel room,” says Matt Kiefer, founder of Hostelgeeks. “Most hostels come with fully equipped kitchens, which means you can cook your own meals. That alone will save you a lot of money while traveling, especially in western countries like France and Spain.”

While staying at a hostel, you can learn about some of the fun and affordable activities you can do.

“Hostels are renowned for hosting more budget-friendly travel activities and even tours,” says Kiefer. This could be a canal cruise in Amsterdam for half the regular price or a free walking tour around Paris.

For cheaper accommodations, visit hostel price comparison sites like hostelz.com. You may be able to deduct 10% to 20% per night from your stay.

“It’s very easy to use, and in a few clicks, you know which booking platform is offering the cheapest hostel rates,” says Kiefer.

11. Be creative with travel points

A little travel savings trumps no travel savings, so don’t be afraid to cash in points before the full trip rewards are earned.

“Our newest and best tip on how to save money on travel is to creatively use your saved credit card and airline points to earn travel (discounts) even if your points don’t cover the full cost of the flight,” said Becca Siegel and Dan Gold owners and travel blogger at Half Half Travel.

Siegel and Gold are using this strategy for their 2022 journey.

“For example, so far this year, we’ve used Wells Fargo, Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards, United Airlines and American Airlines miles collections to get free flights or hotel stays,” Siegel said. “But that doesn’t mean that we specifically have enough points on any single platform to cover the entire cost of the trip.”

So mix and match your travel gifts on your next trip. You can cut your travel costs by a nice amount even without the full reward.

12. Sign up for airline email alerts

Have a favorite airline? Sign up for email alerts, and you can get huge cost savings on airfare.

“The best way to get super cheap airfare is to take advantage of flash sales that are only advertised via email alerts,” says Gennifer Rose, who writes a travel and lifestyle blog at GenniferRose.com. “When you receive a sales alert email, open it immediately and search for flight options for your home city and desired destination. The best ticket prices sell out very quickly. I’ve scored $30 tickets from SFO to NYC during the JetBlue Halloween flash sale.”
