STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Americans have one last chance to sneak away for summer vacation, and millions are planning to do so.
Earlier this month, The Vacationer released its annual 2022 Labor Day Travel Survey, which found that more than 53% of American adults plan to travel over Labor Day weekend.
About 53% of American adults plan to travel this Labor Day weekend, representing roughly 137 million travelers, according to the latest Census data.
According to the survey, 35.5% of Americans plan to travel primarily by car, 14.2% by plane, and an additional 3.3% plan to travel by public transportation.
As is often the case, the country’s oldest people, the over-60s, are the least likely to travel, with only 34.4% intending to do so.
High gas prices appear to be affecting many Americans’ travel plans, the study found.
Americans have been dealing with inflated gas prices since early spring following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and in June the national average hit an all-time high of $5.01 a gallon.
A separate survey by AAA found that 64% of Americans have changed their driving habits since March due to rising gas prices, with the most common changes being people driving less, combining errands and cutting back on shopping or dining out.
Since the dramatic rise in the spring, prices have been in a slow and steady decline, although prices are now well above what drivers have become accustomed to in recent years.
Currently, the national average gas price is $3.85 a gallon, which is 45 cents cheaper than a month ago, according to AAA, but still 71 cents more expensive than a year ago.
About half of Labor Day Travel Survey respondents, 50.2%, said current high gas prices are affecting their Labor Day travel plans, 33.3% said they are affected because they plan to drive, and 16.6% said high gas prices affect airline tickets.
“That number is nearly identical to the number of people who said high gas prices would affect their Fourth of July travel plans. So even though gas prices have dropped somewhat in recent weeks, travelers are still feeling the sting of last year’s gas hike,” said Eric Jones of The Vacationer.
