The fifth episode of Ms. Marvel reintroduced time travel to the MCU for one more time. Previous interactions include the Time Stone in Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War, the Time Heist Machine in Avengers: Endgame, and the TemPad in Loki. Endgame in many ways represented how time travel works for the audience. Many people may have had a similar thought when Scott Land exclaimed, “So Back to the Future is a load of crap?”
Meaning, the logic behind Back to the Future is that when you use a time machine to travel back in time, you can affect the future. Alternatively, in Endgame, Dr. Bruce Banner explains, “If you go into the past, that past becomes your future, and your former present becomes the past, which now cannot be changed by your new future!”
To simplify, so far in the MCU between Endgame and Loki, time travel has meant creating alternate branches of reality throughout the Multiverse. In Ms. Marvel, seemingly through the magic of the Noor dimension, Kamala Khan is sent back to the unbranched reality of 1947. This is seemingly against the established rules of MCU time travel, but there are many different interpretations at this point.
A Multiversal Domino Effect
In Loki Season 1, TVA explains that the events of Avengers: Endgame — the time travel to defeat Thanos — were meant to happen eventually. That’s why they didn’t interfere with their Time Heist. Similarly, during the first season, the audience only sees TVA meddle and prune the branch if it doesn’t fall under the Sacred Timeline. Of course, by the end of Season 1, the Sacred Timeline no longer exists after Sylvie kills the One Who Remains (a variant of Kang the Conqueror), which could once again change how time travel works in the future.
In Ms. Marvel, Kamala’s journey back in time is sudden, underexplained, and seemingly magical. In Episode 4, viewers see Najma stab the bracelet and a tear opens in reality (much like Clea opens a portal in the Dark Dimension) to the partition of India. On the same subject : Secret Pro’s journey of simplifying work style after a long vacation. Then, in episode 5, the audience sees the other side, where Aisha says, “What you seek seeks you.” This is followed by the lighting of the bracelet, colorful tears appear in reality, and Kamala enters the past.
One theory that would go along with MCU logic is that this time travel uses the Multiverse. If the Multiverse is needed for time travel within the MCU, here’s the solution:
What if Earth-616 was Kamala from another universe who came back to help little Nana? Then, Kamala from Earth-616 was brought to another, alternate universe to help another version of Nani. Repeat that ad infinitum and it becomes a multiversal domino effect that was fate, destiny, meant to be, or however one wants to put it. An event that perhaps even a fully operational TVA would approve of because it “should happen”.
Of course, what if Ms. Marvel introduced a whole new way of looking at time travel?

What has been interesting within the MCU so far is that the audience only understands how time travel works through the characters. Sure, Bruce Banner has his explanation, and the TVA travels through time and space quite easily, but is the Multiverse the only way? Is Back to the Future Really a Bunch of Bullshit?
However Kamala gets to 1947, it’s unlike anything fans have seen before. The most interesting part of how Ms. Marvel explains her arrival and helping Nana on Star Trek is that it was always Kamala. She was always the one who saved her grandmother.
This is very similar to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, where future Harry saves himself and Sirius Black in a perfect time loop. This is one of the best ways to use time travel within the plot, and in both cases Kamala and Harry realize that they are the hero.
A time loop indicates a direct cause and effect of the timeline in which one lives. The rules of Back to the Future are simple: if someone changes the past, it will affect the future. Most interestingly, in Back to the Future 2, there is an alternate, horrific version of 1985. Doc Brown and Marty McFly have actually traveled from the future of 2015, 30 years back to this corrupt new world – doubling the fact that this is one timeline in which they work for.
What if the time loop in Ms. Marvel works similarly? For example, what if Kamala failed to save Nani in 1947? Was Kamala ever born? Does he start to fade from existence like Marty McFly at the end of Back to the Future?
Having a more traditional form of time travel is an interesting addition to the established rules of the MCU. However, for now, this is just speculation, as very little explanation has been given as to how Kamala made that fated trip back in time besides… magic.
Hopefully, as the Multiverse continues to expand and time travel continues to be used, more explanations will come along with it.
