HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Before the pandemic, there was no shortage of multinational corporations and other organizations looking to book their meetings and events at the Hawaii Convention Center.

If you drive past the convention center these days, it’s pretty rare to see much activity. But local travel experts who focus on international tourism say interest in booking those big events is slowly returning.

Eric Takahata of Hawaii Tourism Japan, says there are still a few things that keep Japanese visitors from returning to Hawaii. Namely, a fuel surcharge that adds an additional $600 per person for those flying here.

He says that, along with the fact that you still have to take a PCR test to return to Japan, prevents some of them from coming in large numbers.

“Right now it’s about $600 or even a little over $600 per person for a round trip to Hawaii. So you can imagine a family of four by six would cost $2,400,” Takahata said.

However, they stay longer and spend more.

“Spending has increased, which is a good thing, but we see the average length of stay of a Japanese visitor increasing by three days. We were about six days before the pandemic, currently we are at about nine days per person,” added Takahata.

Looking ahead, Takahata says there are several occasions and holidays and other big events like the Honolulu Marathon that will bring many more visitors from Japan to the islands.

“Last year we had about 30,000 runners a year — half of them were Japanese. So we don’t know what the numbers will be for this year, but it’s the biggest event for the Japanese, you know on an annual basis,” Takahata said.

Even the recent major milestone of All Nippon Airlines’ first flying honio returning to Hawaii on July 1 was more or less the last straw.

On that day, 822 visitors came from Japan.

Comparing that to the nearly 5,000 who flew in on the same day in 2019 — we still have a long way to go.

I’m not sure it’s technically a continent. The word "continent" refers to one of the six (seven, if you include Antarctica) large unbroken land masses on earth.
