While many EU countries have eagerly revoked travel restrictions across Europe, France is still one of the most prominent, still holding some travel restrictions in place – a guide to current French travel restrictions can be found here.

France’s mask mandate was abandoned on 16 May 2022, almost two years to the day it was first introduced. But now, with rising Covid-19 rates across France (reaching 342,504 cases reported last week), the French health minister has urged people to start wearing masks again in public transport – but made it clear that it was merely an advice rather than a mandatory requirement.

She also suggested that it would be a good idea if citizens again decided to cover up faces while in crowded public places. Masks are currently only mandatory in medical institutions or places like nursing homes.

This is at the same time as the European Parliament decided to extend the regulation establishing the EU digital COVID certificate – EUDCC, as it is known, has been in use across EU borders since 1 July 2021 (although many countries have since dropped the claim). The regulation is extended until 30 June 2023 by another year.

This certificate has made it possible for European countries to easily determine a traveler’s health status, whether they are healthy, vaccinated or tested negative for Covid-19 and when.

And there are reports that the French government is considering reintroducing the health passport at its borders – a leaked document to the French press has shown that this is a possible proposal to reduce rising Covid-19 infection rates across the country.

It has been made clear that this is only a suggestion and not a return to the Vaccine Pass – where people had to be vaccinated to remain fully involved in French public life. Individuals may remain in a state of permanent health care testing as vaccination is not a prerequisite for validation.

However, it shows how seriously the French government takes the rising Covid-19 rates, and it may also dictate how long the current Covid-19 travel restrictions remain in place.
