As Covid and travel restrictions began to work more than yesterday’s news, travel is finally stepping up after two years of being suspended indefinitely. Whether it is domestic or international tourism, demand has returned to pre-pandemic levels, and millions of Americans want to sail to the nearest paradise destination.

Although the world is reopening, international travel still includes its own set of non-Covid-related rules that tourists must follow. These can range from having a passport that will not expire in the next six months to submitting proof of sufficient financial means and insurance for the entire duration of the trip.

These are some of the most common demands placed on travelers by foreign countries to strengthen their external borders and ensure that those applying for an entry permit are real visitors. Of course, U.S. citizens are subject to the same entry rules, which can vary considerably depending on the destination.

Fortunately, there are a handful of places where U.S. citizens have (far) greater privileges, including permission to travel without a passport – and no, we don’t intend to remind you that Hawaii and Alaska, though remote, are still states within the union. Surprisingly, if you have an ID card other than a passport, it can still take you much further.

Specifically, there are currently 7 destinations that Americans access as smoothly as entering their country, without excessive bureaucracy! Are you ready to find out how far your U.S. citizenship status can take you? Here is the full list of countries and territories that accept Americans, whether or not they are passport holders:

International Destinations

Mexico

A little-known fact among travelers, Mexico actually allows U.S. citizens to enter a country without a passport if they travel by land. See the article : The number one city in the world to travel and work remotely is in the US – and it’s not New York or LA. To be eligible, Americans must have a passport card, a Trusted Traveler ID (NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST cards), or a state-issued Enhanced Driving License (EDL).

Like a passport, a U.S. passport includes the holder’s name, photograph, place of birth, and date of birth, a unique identification number for verification purposes, and the date of issue and expiration date. The big difference is that they are more affordable than regular passports and cost only $ 30 to register instead of $ 130.

Trusted Passenger Cards, on the other hand, are documents issued to “low-risk passengers” for faster approval while traveling between the U.S. and Mexico. Alternatively, those residing in Michigan, Vermont, Minnesota, New York, and Washington may apply for EDL in the unlikely event of driving south to Mexico.

For those in the southern United States going on a trip this summer, there are countless destinations in the immediate vicinity of the border in Mexico. One of our favorites is a seaside retreat in Puerto Peñasco, a town in the state of Sonora on the Pacific coast of Mexico and only a short three and a half hour drive away from Phoenix, Arizona.

Other border towns include vibrant Tijuana, 20 miles south of San Diego, and Ciudad Juárez, part of a cross-border agglomeration with the Texas city of El Paso, although no U.S. state bordering Mexico currently issues EDL. Although Mexico allows Americans to enter with other forms of ID card by land, passports are still the only valid document for air arrivals.

Canada

The United States and Canada, which share the world’s longest international border, have several bilateral agreements that make travel easier for each other’s citizens. This may interest you : Europe Travel: Your Guide to Planning a Summer Trip. Unlike all other foreigners who need a tourist visa or travel permit to enter Canada, Americans can visit the country simply by presenting a valid ID card.

This includes a passport, a passport card or a NEXUS card: all of which can be used on any mode of transport, such as flights, cars, ferries, trains and buses. In contrast, improved driving licenses or FAST cards are only accepted at land and sea borders. Americans are warned that they can stay in Canada for up to 180 days on entry, regardless of the identity document they use.

Countless destinations in Canada are located near the U.S. border or a shot away from many U.S. cities, making cross-border travel incredibly easy. A great example of this is Niagara Falls, a world wonder shared by both countries and sandwiched between Buffalo in New York State and Niagara Falls (city) in Ontario.

Spending a long weekend in metropolitan Vancouver or any of the beautiful historic cities that are part of the Canadian province of British Columbia is also very feasible for residents of the US state of Washington, while New England, especially Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine have direct road connections to French-English bilingual Quebec.

Other U.S. Territories

In addition to the mainland, the U.S. has a collection of unincorporated territories with its own particular culture and national identities. Although these overseas areas are not considered U.S. states, they are an integral part of the state, which means that all Americans traveling from the mainland are welcome – with or without passports.

When traveling from the U.S. to any of these territories, Americans are required to present only a valid ID card. From May 3, 2023, all air passengers aged 18 and over will be required to submit a REAL ID to fly within the U.S., such as a verifiable driver’s license that complies with a REAL ID, a state-issued EDL, or a regular U.S. passport.

The U.S. territories that accept national travel IDs are:

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico, one of America’s favorite Caribbean destinations, recently waived all requirements regarding vaccination against Covid and testing for arrivals from the mainland, allowing domestic visitors entry without restrictions. In addition, because it is unincorporated U.S. territory, the island does not expect continental Americans to have a passport for identification.

There are several direct flights to Puerto Rico from all major cities in the US, including Austin, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas / Forth Worth, Miami, New York and Philadelphia, to name a few. Some of the most famous sights include the colorful old town of San Juan and the Spanish colonial fortresses.

U.S. Virgin Islands

Like Puerto Rico, the triad of Caribbean islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands archipelago is open without medical requirements. Fortunately, there are direct flights to St. Gallen. John, St. Croix in St. Thomas from cities like New York, Miami, Washington, Chicago, Orlando, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore (and many more).

Currently, all Americans need when traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands is a driver’s license or other photo ID issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles if they don’t have other travel documents. From May 2023, REAL ID requirements will apply to air passengers visiting the archipelago.

Guam

Have you heard of the small, picturesque Micronesian island of Guam? It may be more challenging and slightly more expensive to visit than other destinations on this list, but it’s another tropical hotspot that allows U.S. citizens to visit completely visa-free and without prior requirement for new passports: national ID cards are more than enough.

The U.S. Overseas Territory is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, incredibly well-preserved monuments from the Spanish era, and other historical sites such as Asan Beach, where the key events of World War II took place. Direct flights are only available from Honolulu with United Airlines.

Northern Mariana Islands

A group of 14 islands, of which only 3 are developed tourist destinations (Saipan, Tinian and Rota), the American territory of North Mariana boasts sandy beaches, clear water perfect for swimming, numerous diving spots and wildlife refuges – but the wonderful environment that hosted the Battle of Saipan, one of the bloodiest in World War II.

The only way for Americans to reach Northern Mariana, traveling with a verifiable driver’s license or other equivalent identity document, is a flight from the U.S. mainland to Honolulu, then on to Guam, and finally to Saipan International Airport, which serves Saipan Island. All other flights depart from mainland China, Hong Kong or South Korea.

American Samoa

American Samoa is a group of seven South Pacific islands adorned with views of the volcano, tropical humid forests and immaculate beaches, where excessive tourism does not seem to worry. Pago Pago, the regional capital, provides American Samoa with the only access to the outside world by direct flights to and from Honolulu by Hawaiian Airlines.

As an American unincorporated territory, these islands are heavily dependent on domestic tourism, and most of the attractions are in the capital and surrounding villages. From Pago Pago International Airport, visitors can fly to Fiti’ut on the island of Taʻū and Ofu, where you will find secluded beaches and impressive nature.

Bottom Line

Because Guam only has domestic connections to other U.S. mainland cities via Hawaii, and domestic flights to the Northern Mariana Islands depart only through Guam, U.S. citizens flying without a passport must book tickets that do not include air transit or stops in all territories. , not in the United States.

For more information on travel documentation, visit the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website for official guidance. When going abroad, Americans are advised to carry valid passports with them, even if other arrangements have been made, as this is the most recognized document for international travel.
