Texans who want to have an abortion at any stage of pregnancy will soon travel along state lines, look beyond the U.S.-Mexico border or work outside the law, while others will carry unwanted pregnancies until period.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Roe v. Driver and will allow governments to enact their own laws restricting access to abortion. Abortion advocates are creating networks and empowering existing ones to help people traveling to regions that allow abortion. But that is not everyone’s choice. It’s not just the price of a plane ticket or a hotel, says Davé. Many of their clients are unable or unwilling to have child care or have time off work or are unable to safely share their family plans. Some people cannot leave the state, including undocumented immigrants and youth, especially those in foster care.
Medication abortion
People who cannot travel outside the state may find ways to obtain illegal abortion, by applying online or through advocacy networks.

But in recent years, as access to abortion has decreased in Texas and across the country, more and more people are looking to access these drugs in other ways. AidAccess, a global non-profit organization, provides Texans with prescription drugs, although state laws prohibit them from doing so. While the federal government has made efforts to curb AidAccess, it continues to operate openly.
Demand for abortion medication has increased following increased restrictions, according to University of Texas researcher Abigail Aiken. After Texas passed its law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, Aiken found that AidAccess applications increased by more than 1000%.
“Of course, this time, it just won’t be Texas,” Aiken said. “Once we have these geographical parts of the country that are originally areas of abortion bans, that will increase the need for self-government.”

Refusing to send abortion medication is expected to be an area of future focus for Republican lawmakers in Texas. Even with the exception of pregnant patients, Diaz-Tello warns that some pregnant women will suddenly be subjected to scans and complaints.
“We know that prosecutors will try to punish people, regardless of what the law says,” she said. “So in order to be able to resist that, it is important to know that they are illegal criminals.”
