Westbrook had 20 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in 34 minutes in a 113-112 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night. It was Westbrook’s fourth triple-double of the season, the most in NBA history. Detlef Schrempfli has the second most with three. The former MVP now has 198 career triple-doubles and counting.
After starting his entire career, Westbrook certainly deserves some credit for taking the Lakers’ bench role this season. He has been able to stay productive and energetic while not playing with LA’s top five. Therefore, he is a legitimate candidate for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. Should he win the Sixth Man of the Year, he would become just the third player in league history to win both the award and the NBA MVP. James Harden and Bill Walton are the only players to have done so.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, Westbrook’s production against Philadelphia wasn’t enough to lead the team to victory, as his questionable decision-making late in the game will likely overshadow his stats. With the Lakers down by one and the clock running down, Westbrook decided to call his number. He tried to drive Sixers center Joel Embiid to the basket, but he couldn’t make the play.
Westbrook claimed Embiid fouled him in the postgame, but if he did, the refs obviously missed it. In this situation, passing the ball to LeBron James would probably be the wiser decision. But while Westbrook’s decision-making can be questioned at times, his production, whether starting or coming off the bench, cannot be.
