The Bruins overcame a rough opening minutes to pick up one of their only wins of the season, thanks in large part to a late push from the team’s young core.
No. 11 UCLA women’s basketball (12-1, 1-0 Pac-12) defeated Fresno State (7-6, 0-0 Mountain West) 82-48 on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins dominated in almost every statistical category outside of 3-point shooting, gradually building a lead over time until the blowout in the second half.
It didn’t look like things were going to turn out that way early on, considering three of the first four goals came from the Bulldogs. UCLA didn’t score until nearly three minutes into the contest, and it wasn’t until 4:17 into the first quarter that they took their first lead.
The Bruins closed the opening frame on a 15-3 run and also hit the first shot of the second, before the Bulldogs hit a pair of 3-pointers and went on an 8-0 run, making it a two-point game again. .
UCLA responded with a 13-0 run, though, and it was all blue and gold from that point on.
Guard Charisma Osborne made a layup to create some breathing room, then nearly doubled her 3-pointer. Forward Gabriela Jaquez followed with her triple, and then defender Kiki Rice scored an and-1.
The Bruins led 40-25 at halftime, then opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 25-point lead. When the Bulldogs tried to come back with a 10-0 run at the end. Two minutes into the frame – seven of those points coming from the free throw line – Jaquez hit a layup before the buzzer to stop the bleeding.

The Bruins’ next two leading scorers were tied with six points: freshman forward Lina Sontag and Christeen Iwuala.
UCLA’s bench outscored Fresno State by 18, and the Bruins had a 30-point advantage in the paint, a 13-point advantage off turnovers, a 13-point advantage on second-down opportunities and a seven-point advantage on the fast break. .
The next time UCLA takes the floor is for Pac-12 play, which opens at Oregon on Dec. 30. The Bruins and Ducks matchup in Eugene will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks and is scheduled to air at 6 p.m.
