Swim

The Sun Devils opened the season at Georgia in Gabrielsen Natatorium on September 30. To see also : Strategy Time Season 3: Big Day Video Releases, Broadcasts & Stories. The men split their contest with the Georgia Bulldogs and defeated the Missouri Tigers, while the women battled hard but ultimately came up short.

The final scores for the men’s team were 46-44 and 155.5-145.5 against Georgia and 191-109 against Missouri. Léon Marchand stood out early in his sophomore season, winning all three individual events and setting state records with each of his times.

Marchand swam the 200 breaststroke in 1:43.21, the 200 breaststroke in 1:57.67 and the 200 individual medley in 1:44.32.

On the women’s side, sophomore Emma Gehlert posted a time of 2:14.86 in the 200 breast, the second-best time in the state this season. Redshirt junior Jade Foelske took first in the women’s 150 butterfly with a time of 1:25.61 in her hometown on Friday. Redshirt junior Lindsay Loone came in third with a time of 1:27.35.

Georgia had 13 freshmen make their Sun Devil debuts. Among them Owen McDonald, who took third place in the 150 back with a time of 1:16.09 on Friday.

Freshman Amayah Wiley scored 236.1 in the 1-meter jump to place second on Friday. She is the first female diver to compete for ASU since the 2018-19 season.

To close out Saturday’s meet, the Sun Devils impressed in the 400 freestyle relay as both the men’s and women’s teams took first place.

Graduate student Grant House, sophomore Patrick Sammon, redshirt junior Jack Dolan and Marchand had a time of 2:52.89. For the Looney women’s team, sophomore Erin Milligan, freshman Ieva Maluka and sophomore Charli Brown finished in 3:24.78.

The Sun Devils will return to Tempe to face Wisconsin on October 22nd.

Soccer

The Sun Devils continued Pac-12 play against a strong UC Berkeley team on Thursday, picking up a close 2-1 victory over the Golden Bears. Read also : Collin Sexton deserves more than what the free agent market seems willing to pay him. After ASU gave up an early penalty, it found itself needing a comeback.

The Sun Devils responded by dominating possession in the middle and controlling the game with tempo. Graduate student midfielder Alexia Delgado equalized with a free kick goal.

Graduate student midfielder Eva van Deursen broke the deadlock on a pass from Delgado in the 70th minute of the game.

The Golden Bears failed to convert any chances late in the game, allowing ASU to remain undefeated in the conference.

The Sun Devils suffered their first loss of the season against the Stanford Cardinals on Sunday, October 2nd. ASU and Stanford went back and forth in the first half of the matchup, but neither was able to find the back of the net.

Stanford was able to break the tie in the 57th minute with a goal by freshman forward Allie Montoya.

That goal swung the momentum against a Sun Devil team that surrendered its second goal of the game to redshirt sophomore midfielder Catherine Paulson. ASU lost 2-0.

The Sun Devils struggled to create chances, registering just one shot on goal – their lowest total of the season.

Despite the struggles, freshman goalkeeper Pauline Nelles had a fantastic game in net with six saves, including some heroic stops.

The Sun Devils will look to bounce back on the road against the no. 1 UCLA Bruins Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. MST.

Volleyball

The ASU volleyball team had a tough time in Pac-12 play this past week, as the Sun Devils were swept by the University of Oregon 3-0 in three games and came up short against Oregon State 3-2. On the same subject : My 10 favorite travel products after taking 12 trips in just one year.

The first set was close for the Sun Devils as many points were attacked and conceded.

The eleventh point of the game was a breakaway for Oregon and the Ducks went on a five-point streak. The Sun Devils struggled with junior outside hitter Marta Levinska, but the Sun Devils were unable to catch a break. The streak ended in Oregon’s favor, 25-17.

The next set was tough for the Sun Devils, but kills by Levinska, sophomore outside hitter Geli Cyr, senior outside hitter Iman Isanovic and senior setter Shannon Shields kept ASU in the game.

The series was tied until Oregon was able to attack and get five points from the attacks, making the score 14-9. The Sun Devils were unable to come back from that run and lost the set 25-15.

ASU got off to a slow start in the third set of this match, but eventually gained momentum.

Oregon won the first three points of the match with a service error and aggressive attacks. ASU got a break from the offense with an error that allowed the Sun Devils to close the gap. Oregon regained control and ran off points to take a 25-12 run. ASU lost the game 3-0.

In their next game, the Sun Devils head south to Corvallis, Oregon to play Oregon State on Sunday.

ASU came out strong in the first game as Isanovic and Cyr created opportunities at the net.

The teams were evenly matched throughout the set, but OSU eventually took the lead with an offense that ASU couldn’t defend. ASU regained the punt and made a run to tie the game, but lost the game. OSU won the series 25-23.

ASU dropped the first set in the first 10 points of the second set.

Junior middle blocker Claire Jeter, Cyr and Levinska had a string of attacks that put OSU up three points at 5-2. OSU earned some points but was no match for ASU’s offense. Jeter finished the game with a steady stream of serves, which allowed for even more opportunities. The Sun Devils won the run 25-18.

The two teams, who were tied at 1:1, fought for victory in the third set.

The game was extremely tight, but Isanovic and Cyr had notable kills, not to mention the unstoppable block of Kreiling and Isanovic. At 13-12, ASU went on a scoring spree to extend its lead. OSU tried to regain the points but was unable to recover. ASU won the run 25-17.

OSU had the momentum in the fourth set, but was met with six kills from Levinska and a service ace from Isanovic. OSU regained the point and produced a constant attack, eventually winning the run 25-22.

The match was decided by the fifth set, which caused a lot of tension on both sides. Jeter, Cyr, Isanovic and Shields were the mainstays of the game and earned the Sun Devil points with attacks and passes. OSU had a hard time getting the offense back and allowed ASU to go on a 15-12 run. Overall, ASU won the game 3-2.

ASU will return to Tempe to play UCLA on Friday, October 7th at 7pm MST.

Cross country

The ASU men’s and women’s cross country teams placed second and fourth, respectively, out of six schools at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson, Arizona in ASU’s regular season finale.

Senior Vincent Mauri led the Sun Devils, taking first in the men’s 8,000 meters with a time of 23:20.4, 37 seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Sophomore Dayton Carlson (24:43.2) and freshman Tyler Schierenberg (25:20.8) finished in the top 20 to help the men’s team finish second overall. Schierenburg improved by nine seconds compared to the first race two weeks ago.

Senior Lena Lebrun leads the women’s team with a ninth-place finish of 21:02.4 in the 6,000 meters. Senior Jenna Lee placed 18th in 21:46.0 after finishing 22 seconds behind. No other Sun Devils finished with a time better than 22:00.

The teams focus on the Pac-12 Championship on Friday, Oct. 28 at UC Riverside’s Agricultural Operations course in California.
