FLAT ROCK – Nolan Sanders missed his goal of doubling for the season on Wednesday.

The Airport freshman scored three goals to lead his team to a 4-3 win over Flat Rock in the opening round of the Huron League Soccer Tournament.

Sanders has 7 goals this season.

“He started the season with a lot of injuries, but he is one of the most talented players I have ever coached,” Airport coach Goran Cepo. “Being a little bit older and a little bit stronger, he’s going to be a really good player.”

The Huron League Tournament splits the eight teams in half with the top four teams playing a round robin and the bottom four doing the same.

“I love it,” Cepo said. “I’m on both ends now in the top half and now in the bottom half. I think it gives the teams in the top half a chance to have more competitive games and the bottom half can also be competitive with each other.

“Tonight was a great example. We had nine freshmen in total and I’m pretty sure Flat Rock had five or six as well.”

Brandon McComas scored the other goal and Jaiden Nason and Dillon Yoas registered assists. Tayton Ruhlig made 6 saves for Airport (5-8-1).

“This is a great back and forth game between two very young teams,” said Cep. “We challenged our players at half-time trailing 2-1 and they responded with an excellent second half.”

Reagan Engelbert scored two goals and Brady McBride one for Flat Rock. Mitchell Smith logged a pair of assists.
