The Phillies will face the Washington Nationals in a series of three matches starting Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. But one familiar voice will be missing from the broadcast.

Tom McCarthy, in his 13th season as the voice of the television team on NBC Sports Philadelphia (he spent five years on the radio), will not be calling for matches as he will be broadcasting CBS the Sunday NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans at 1pm

The McCarthy role will be replaced by longtime Phillies radio announcer Scott Franzke, who also replaced the game in May when McCarthy attended his daughter’s graduation from The College of New Jersey. The match call alongside Franzke at NBC Sports Philadelphia will be John Crow. Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, who is joining the stream for some of Sunday’s home games, will not be on hand this weekend.

Meanwhile, Franzke will be replaced on the Phillies radio show by Pat McCarthy, Tom’s 27-year-old son, who is currently calling games for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs triple A. He will be joined by longtime announcer Phillies Larry Andersen, who has stepped back this season to announce only the team’s weekend games. As a result, the Phillies switched to the rotation of four ex-players – Michael Bourne, Chad Durbin, Erik Kratz, and Kevin Stocker – to make phone calls on the radio for most of the season.

In addition to the broadcast draw, First Lady Jill Biden – who grew up in Willow Grove and is a longtime Phillies fan – will be at Citizens Bank Park Friday to watch her first game since moving to the White House.

McCarthy will also miss two Phillies games against Atlanta Braves on Saturday 17 September and Sunday 18 September as he has scheduled the Colts’ Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on CBS. He has also planned to play several NFL games on radio again for Westwood One this season, including a Monday Night Football match between the Tennessee Titans and the Buffalo Bills on September 19, which turns out to be an unsuccessful day for the Phillies.

This season nine, McCarthy named the NFL matches on CBS where he once again paired up with former New York Giants runaway Tiki Barber. Last year, McCarthy called a match against top CBS analyst Tony Romo when he replaced play-by-play commentator Jim Nantz.

“[Romo] is really easy [at work] because he’s a normal guy who just loves the game,” McCarthy told The Inquirer after the game. “His knowledge of the game is phenomenal. His memory is a bit like the memory of [John] The Raven, where he just remembers things that I will never be able to remember.

Philadelphia will make three appearances on CBS this season – October 12 against the Jacksonville Jaguar, October 30 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and November 20 against the Colts.

While McCarthy had no plans to announce any Eagles matches this season, he called Birds’ playoff defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on radio for Westwood One alongside new NBC Sports Philadelphia analyst Ron Jaworski.

“I’ve been really lucky on a million different fronts,” McCarthy told The Inquirer in January. “I’ve managed to get a lot of [broadcasting] things that I’ve never had before, and I’m so thankful. Whatever comes in the future will come in the future. If not, then no. It’s totally fine with me. “
