NFL betting is driving the bus on America’s sports road. So in my debut as a FOX Sports contributor, believe me, I’m not going to miss that bus. But first, a little background.
I’m not a sharp traitor, so I’m not going to pass myself off as some kind of expert. However, like what actor Liam Neeson said in the movie Taken, what I do have is a unique skill set – or more accurately, a unique foundation set. That is, the vast number of candidates placed in the risk rooms of sportsbooks all over the country, and the bettors on our side of the line.
Leaning into those sources and into my work over the past 15 years as a sports betting industry, here are 10 interesting NFL betting tips for the 2022-23 season.
Of course, Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a popular NFC team. Ditto for Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers.
But an unexpected team is making noise in many 2022 NFL betting markets.
“Our biggest responsibility for winning the NFC is the Saints. Our biggest responsibility for Coach of the Year is the Saints’ Dennis Allen,” said WynnBet trader Andy Morrissey. “We will keep an eye on the Saints every year.”
New Orleans opened +2500 in WynnBet odds to win the NFC. The Saints have since cut that number in half, sitting as a +1200 co-six option.
Meanwhile, Allen took over as Saints coach after Sean Payton’s 16-year winning streak. Allen is the +1800 co-eighth pick in the NFL Coach of the Year odds, boosting from a +2500 start.
The Denver Broncos got a big upgrade at quarterback with the acquisition of Russell Wilson in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. There are plenty of NFL bets on the move, and plenty of optimism in the Mile High City.
But one sharp bettor says others will be advised to hold back on the Broncos market.
“Denver has a solid system. The offensive line will allow the run game to thrive,” he said. “The problem is they’re the third-best team in the AFC West, behind the Chiefs and Chargers. And Russell Wilson the last two years has been average. He doesn’t use his feet and can only throw deep. .ball.
“Wilson is not what he used to be.”
On the flip side, the professional bettor has a good view on the Indianapolis Colts. It’s not Super Bowl-high, mind you – although I’d personally take the pop on Indy at +2500. But he beat the Colts to win the AFC South.
“I took them at +140, +130, +120,” he said, noting that the Colts are now in the -140 range in most books and favorites to win the division. “Indianapolis is loaded with a dangerous offensive line, which is probably the best in the game. The Colts have the greatest athleticism, and Matt Ryan will win the game. The coaching is strong, and the defense is near the top . Indy should be dominated by a terrible division.”
For my money – which is usually #ChilisMoney, by the way – I think the trainers should go for the fourth one more often. Don’t worry if it’s the first quarter or the last two minutes. WynnBet’s Morrissey believes that more coaches are starting to get that mindset, and oddsmakers may adjust as a result.
“I’m going to watch the first game of the season,” Morrissey said, noting the absence could lead to more goals. “This is the Champions League, and there has been a lot of talk about the fourth decision in the last few years. I think that most teams are finding out what is a good offense, with the permission of the play. and before. movement, and throwing the ball down the field to players and being aggressive on fourth down.”

Last season, rookie QB Mac Jones helped New England go 10-7 and earn an AFC wild card berth. But McDaniels won’t be in Jones’ ear this year. The aforementioned sharpshooter believes the loss of McDaniels will not bode well for Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
“New England is in big trouble this year. Losing Josh McDaniels is huge for a young QB,” he said. “Mac Jones hasn’t done a great job at the NFL level — injury-riddled, athletically challenged, and he’s a weapon offense.
If the 2022 NFL betting action at Caesars Sports is any indication, customers are convinced that the Philadelphia Eagles are in for a great year. Last season, the Eagles went a mediocre 9-8, though somehow that was enough to earn them an NFC wild-card bid.
This year, expectations are higher for QB Jalen Hurts & amp; Co. For example, the Eagles opened +4000 on the Super Bowl oddsboard, and now they are down to +2500. This includes one Nevada bettor who boarded late, but still bet $5,000 at +2500, for a possible (though unlikely) win of $125,000.
But the interest of the Eagles goes beyond this.
The Dallas Cowboys opened as -150 favorites and the Eagles +330 to win the NFC East. Now it’s almost a dead heat, with the Cowboys +130 and the Eagles +150. In fact, on Caesar’s books, Philly has taken more NFC East cash than the Cowboys, Giants and Commanders combined.
In the Yes/No To Make The Playoffs market, betting Yes on Philadelphia is a popular play. No is the original favorite -130; now E-160. In fact, the Eagles receive the second-highest salary per game, trailing only the Saints.
Finally, Philly’s season win total moved from 9 (under -130) to 9.5 (over -140). Nine out of every 10 tickets and dollars are at the top of Caesars’ books, banking on a double-digit winning season.
An interesting fact about the growing legalization of sports betting in the United States is that local interest is increasing, especially in the NFL. Regionalism wasn’t a problem in Las Vegas for decades — until Sin City got an NFL team.
Of course, when the Raiders are in Oakland or Los Angeles, there are always some requests from California visitors. But now that they are the Las Vegas Raiders and entering their third season in Glitter Gulch, that passion is on steroids.
“For us, it’s just about the Raiders. We’re buried alive against the Raiders,” said Scott Shelton of BetMGM Nevada, noting the big action from locals and visitors to Vegas. “The tickets and the money are all on them, to win the Super Bowl or win the AFC. It’s a lot of cash flow.”
However, this is only at BetMGM Nevada. BetMGM HQ in New Jersey oversees the uneven movement in the country for the company, and that makes for interesting news. The Raiders opened +5000 to win the Super Bowl and dropped to +3500, but have since moved back to +4000, miles behind the favorites.
While the Raiders are a major liability in the Vegas market, a few teams represent worse results for BetMGM nationally, particularly the Bills, Broncos and Chargers.
The NFL’s season win total is always a popular bet, and Shelton has shown some good qualities.
Shelton said of the action at BetMGM’s Vegas books, “It’s amazing the public teams, the Buccaneers and the Cowboys, from both the betting and betting public.”
The Buccaneers’ win total is not up from 11.5, but the price has changed from -110 pick ’em to less than -150. The Cowboys’ opening win total was 8.5, but prices rose from -110 to take ’em down to -155.
On the flip side, bettors like the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins. Minnesota opened at 8.5 (-110) and got all the way to over -170 before BetMGM moved to 9.5 (-110). Miami did not rise from 8.5, but its price rose from -110 to accept to above -145.
With a new coach in Matt Eberflus, and with QB Justin Fields having a year under his belt, the Chicago Bears are likely expecting an upgrade. Bettors seem to think otherwise, including the odds to win the NFC North. This has BetMGM Nevada based in Chicago to surprise people.
“Traditionally, the Bears are a public team. But this year, they have a good chance to win the NFC North,” Shelton said.
Chicago opened +800 in the market odds distribution and is now increasing back at +1100, attracting little attention. The Packers are -155 favorites, followed by the Vikings (+250) and the Lions (+850).
