But the truth is, as we saw in several announcements this week — the women’s college basketball national championship, headed to ABC in the 2023 season, and the NWSL championship game, played in prime time on CBS on October 29 – that sports have an audience and, with each new opportunity, a track record that makes it no longer available for networks to post events of the marquee on larger platforms. Of course, it’s not for women’s sports. It will help the network stem the tide of declining audiences for almost everything else.
Let’s start with ESPN’s decision to move the national title game – which is highly anticipated to feature Aliyah in Boston and South Carolina – on ABC from ESPN.
“It’s a milestone announcement for women’s basketball to be able to air the national championship game in Dallas for an expanded audience on ABC for the first time in 2023,” said Beth Goetz, chairwoman of the Women’s Basketball Committee. As for the NWSL title game on CBS, the numbers are even more complicated. There’s no real championship base – last season it drew 525,000 eyes, a huge jump from 2019, but it’s still a daytime show. It’s an opportunity for CBS to see what the NWSL title game cam gets to the audience with 60 Minutes as a leader, something I think it’s fair to say none of us have covered the league before. who can think as recently as a few years ago. , when recently departed NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush used to make deals for the league to be on television in the middle of the season.
