Much attention is being paid to fall sports on the pitch (see football preview next week), but four other sports started their seasons last week, each with gifted athletes, strong team heritage and high expectations for this year.
Behind the Whitefish Bulldogs four-year winning streak, Flathead Valley boasts some of the strongest soccer teams in the state and looks poised to continue that tradition this fall. Several local long-distance runners will be eyeing the podium at the October state game, and the valley golf teams exited strongly brandishing. In addition, a new sport, flagship football, will appear on the pitch in the shortened inaugural season. Here are a few threads to pay attention to this fall.
SOCCER
The Whitefish boys have not lost a soccer game since 2017, making them the de facto favorites to win the A-class state title for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year, cementing their position as the best soccer dynasty in the state. The Bulldogs lost 10 seniors, five of whom were honorary players from all states, including Gabe Menicke, who scored 27 goals in the top of the state last season. Junior Collin Lyman scored eight goals last year and will be looking to fill the void left by Menicke. Sophomore Preston McPherson and junior Charlie Hyatt will join Lyman to lead the Bulldogs on the pitch while Ethan Schott will take over as goalkeeper, replacing Will Peppmeier, whose last second defense gave the Bulldogs the title of state champion last year.
In line with coach John Lacey’s strategy of playing deep within his squad, the roster includes 21 lower graders who will be on hand to watch the program’s success and fuel its future runs.
As the best competing team, Columbia Falls faced the Bulldogs in the last two state finals and returned 10 of the 11 starters. The talented team will be led by Kai Golan – the state’s leading returning shooter – along with Finley Sundberg, Dale Blickhan and Ethan Austin. Among them, Golan, Blickhan and Sundberg scored 46 goals and 44 assists, and Wildcats will be hoping to return to the state final.
On the girls’ side, Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Bigfork are looking to bolster their appearances in state tournaments in 2021, where Whitefish and Bigfork fell in their semi-final matches.
Whitefish will be hosted by junior Olivia Genovese and Isabelle Cooke, both returning from all the conferences, supported by several talented second-year strikers. Columbia Falls loses the leading offensive to Maddie Robison, but the Wildkats will be led by junior Hope McAtee. McAtee is one of the state’s leaders in assists in history. The Bigfork trio, which includes Scout Nadeau, Danika Bucklin and Braeden Gunlock, will keep the Valkyries in the mix.
Just two seasons before the program’s first state championship, the Glacier Girls’ team aims to achieve their goal under second-year coach Damien Blackburn.
Wolfpack is returning four players from across the conference, including junior Reagan Brisendine, who led the team with 12 goals last year. Calista Wroble and Emmery Schmidt will help in the attack as the Wolf Pack wants to return to the final state.
On the boys’ side, Wolfpack hopes to match, if not exceed, last year’s success, culminating in a state final against six-time state champion Hellgate. The wolf pack left the field painfully, losing 1-0 after a match that almost ended in a shootout. The team finished 11 seniors, but coach Ryan Billiet would not have called it a year of rebuilding. Talented seniors, including Harrison Sanders, Davis Rennie, and the younger Hunter Lisowski, will maintain strong traditions.
In Flathead, both Braves and Bravettes will bring in new head coaches. Alejandro Calderon will take over as head coach of the boys after spending five years as a college junior coach. Meanwhile, Zach Brenneman focuses on the college team following Bleda Doda’s resignation this spring.
Braves finished last season 1-13-0 and only mean an upward trajectory, while Bravettes 3-9-2’s record could also improve. The Bravettes will benefit from a strong contingent of the upper classes who will maintain team continuity throughout the transition period.
GOLF
The first sport to start competing each fall is golf, and the AA Grade starts the season with two completed invitations. The Glacier boys were the winners of Great Falls Invite led by Junior Tyler Avery, who scored one of the best runners-up appearances in Montana history with rounds 69-68 to be dropped just two strokes. The Glacier girls also came second by Chloe Tanner (79-80), who was fifth in the state last year.
After two runners-up, Whitefish senior Billy Smith is looking for his own individual title this year. Whitefish won the team title in 2020 and was second last year, with senior Johnny Nix (9th) making a return.
CROSS COUNTRY
Flathead Bravette are entering cross country season with a strong squad that will be a threat to the AA podium. The university team only graduated from one college from last year, and a strong crew of lower-graders are trying to prove themselves. Junior Lilli Rumsey Eash, fourth last year, is the most returning player in the state and has his way to an individual title. Rumsey Eash finished 42 seconds ahead of the next runner at the last October state game, giving her some buffer to keep all newcomers to the cross county scene. Behind her, Madelaine Jellison (14th), Josie Wilson (26th) and Afton Write (48) will be strong contenders for lowering the Bravettes’ score. The Flathead boys team draws only two university members, Bauer Hollman (37) and Reilly Johnson (38).
Both Wolfpack squads will be fielding young teams across the city. Third-year coach, Cody Moore, expressed his belief that teams are the strongest with whom he has worked so far. The girls’ team will be made up of several track players who will play their first cross-country season, including second-graders Alyssa Vollertsen and Carmen Eddy. Anna Tretter, another sophomore student, will complete the front Wolfpack pack.
In Grade A, Columbia Falls retires from the first team title in the girls’ side program and returns to the strong squad. Individual state champion Hannah Sempf has graduated, but Siri Erickson will be on hand to provide the Wildkats low stick. Behind her, Courtney Hoerner (18th), Marissa Schaeffer (32nd) and Ally Sempf (62nd) will try to stop Corvallis, who will return all shooters from last year’s runner-up.
In the A boys’ class, Whitefish’s Mason Genovese will be the second fastest returning athlete this year after finishing sixth in the state last fall, but will be challenged by younger teammate Deneb Linton, who did not compete in the state competition but was Bulldog runner-up in all seasons. That 1-2 blow could be enough to put the Bulldogs on the podium, especially as last year’s top teams are losing a lot of runners.
In Grade B, Bigfork second-year coach Ryan Nollan will see if his small group of athletes can repeat themselves as state champions. Junior Jack Jensen will be aiming for the individual title after finishing third behind two seniors last year.
VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball tournament will once again return to the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse at Montana State University this fall.
Glacier High School’s new head volleyball coach Courtney Baker wants to keep Wolfpack on track after losing the 2019 state tournament. Last season, Wolfpack lost the match in the first round to a possible runner-up in Billings West. Wolfpack returns three players attending all conferences, including all honorary Maddie Frazier state players.
Across the city of Flathead Bravette, they haven’t made a state podium since 2012, but third-year coach Emily Russell is hungry for the trophy after becoming a 2012 runner-up and is making great strides on the program. In 2021, the Bravettes were 14-10 years old and entered the state AA tournament. All conference seniors Akilah Kubi and Cyan Moody will bring leadership to the team.
In Class A, Columbia Falls will be looking to rebound from 2021, in which the Wildkats failed to take part in the state tournament. Wildkaty are just six years sidelined from consecutive titles in 2015 and 2016, and lost an tied title to Billings Central in 2020. straight one year and six senior graduates.
FLAG FOOTBALL
In the spring of 2021, the Montana High School Association announced a pilot program for girls in flag football. The inaugural season will consist of three teams and will last until October 1 with the championship tournament in Missoula.
